Neat shots guys - I have about 150 or so to go through but this was my very first attemp tonight as a matter of fact. Shot at Fair St. Louis... I was way too close for my 50mm (my widest right now) but I shot away anyway...

Nice shots guys. I'll see how my luck goes tomorrow, but it'll be a miracle to get anything at all without a tripod or any option to set exposure time. :(

This is not exactly Fireworks, but just before they began here is a shot of the Eads Bridge (It spans the Mississippi, just north of the Arch.) The had lights set up on it, I was wanting to sit up there for the airshow and fireworks, but some "Private Party" had rented the bridge out just for tonight, figures. I bet it was the Busch Family, as in Annheiser-Busch. The lights were for a ceremony called meeting of the clydesdales. They apparenly had two teams of horses; one set out from LA the other NewYork... Not sure on the specifics but they met on the border of IL and MO in the middle of the Eads Bridge. So there ya have it ... I'm still sore I didn't get to set my camera up there (Such a great view of the city from up there)!

Fireworks at Magic Mountain, CA (taken from a Walmart parking lot 1 mile away). I didn't know the power lines were in the way until the fireworks started.
Taken with a Canon 20D, 80mm, f/10 & 15 second exposure.

This is one i liked the best of my firework shots, please let me know your opinion. thanks.
bald eagle, about the one through the trees: (forgot to quote)
very nice. haven't seen anything like that before. i usually find fireworks shots a bit dull, especially those w/out foreground subject, but that one i like.
aparmley: that feathered look is pretty nice as well. the 50mm seems perfect for that shot.
great job guys for adding something interesting to a subject that always seems to look the same.

Thanks Ref ...
mcenut - I like that shot, its a shame about the powerline, but once the show starts what are you going to do but go with it. I think it was handled very nicely.

Same thing happened here (hence it's cropped off to rid of that).
Despite having no tripod or any ability to prolong exposure (or change aperture), I managed to capture one shot that looked remotely like fireworks. The others all looked like somebody on a bad hair day  or just a plain blur due to camera shake. The picture's not great by any means, but I got something which is still better than what I expected given the circumstances.

Normally, I find fireworks pictures kind-of boring, but I have to agree with "chick" on this one. Very nicely done.

This is my second year of trying for a decent pic of fireworks. Last years efforts were garbage. This year I spent some time researching techniques and thought I was prepared. I use a Canon Powershot A80 and I've been happy with it's performance. I set two different settings, one with ISO 100 and one with ISO 200. I used the TV setting programmed for either 3.2 or 5 sec of exposure. The problem is the f-stop setting. With this camera, if you set the exposure time, you can't set the f-stop. Consequently, most of the shots were metered in the dark and the aperature was wide-open at f 2.8. Next year I'll try the AV setting at f 8.0 and see what happens. At any rate, here is my fav. shot from the Fourth. I've adjust the brightness and the contrast a bit and run an unsharp mask. Let me know what ya think.

Wow!!! Great pics everyone! I wasn't able to go out and see any nice fireworks displays, but the neighbors never disappoint!!! I didn't even want to look at the pics cause the "display" wasn't all that great...but to my amazement they came out half way decent! So, these are all shot from my front porch. Thanks goes out to the neighbors who spent hundreds of dollars so that I could take pics of fireworks on July 4th :D

And yet another one. I was shutter-happy during that night! :D
Excuse the smoke/haze in the shot -- there were literally thousands of fireworks and and firecrackers exploding at the same time!

If the buildings' roofs were not enough distractions, powerlines (diagonal ones) could not be avoided. :(
