View Full Version : FZ5 Lens Hood Adaptor - do I need it?

Can anyone help with regards to wether I need to attach the lens hood adaptor (and lens hood) to my FZ5 ?
It makes it quite a big camera and means I would need a bigger case - I would rather save the space.
Will it have any impact on the photos if I leave it off ?
Any help appreciated,
Brian

I've never actually been able to tell a difference with or without. But then, I just have the silver "plastic toy" version of the fz20.
Brian,
I know the feeling, the hood requires a larger case. I have FZ20. When I know I will be shooting only indoors, I do not use the hood. I have taken some photos outdoors without the hood without any problems. I did make sure that the sun was not on the lens.
I just like the protection that the lens hood and a UV filter give to the lens.

same here.
i use the adapter always as i got a uv filter to go with it as lens protection. there are those though who opt not to go for the protection.
with such, got myself instead a bigger bag which fits the camera with the adapter connected as well as the other accessories i purchased.
at times when indoors or when i want to be low-key, i take off the adapter but in bright sunlight i attach the hood, adapter and filter.

I couldn't quite tell from reading your post if you know you can turn the hood around where the hood encompasses the lens. Page 21 of the owners manual. Like that, the case needed isn't much bigger, I found a case from Ritz, the Quantaray - Holster Case that fits perfectly. I am not sure if it's the small or medium size as the model is not marked on the case. I have the camera in the main compartment and in the other pocket, I have two extra memory cards, an extra battery in the charger, and a lens cleaning cloth. Not too much room for anything else, but I am good to go.

Panasonic supplies a 'flower' lens hood for use with the FZ5, which attaches via an adapter collar (which also accepts optional MC (multi-coated) and ND (neutral density) filters - though not at the same time. The hood reduces flare in bright light - especially at the wide end of the zoom. You can't leave it attached permanently, however, as it can interfere with the AF illuminator in low light, and block the flash at short subject distances.

Yes, but the hood can be flipped around for storage as in the scan above.

I made a simple, not elegant, sheet plastic hood that will fold up and take very little room in my waist-pac. Maybe a tubular hood would be technically correct but it does keep sun off the lens. BTW it attaches to the camera with 'Velcro' like a ball cap. Photo shows it on a TCON-14B, 86mm. Also fits my WCON-08B, 105mm or any other lens.
