OK, I've been playing around with some of the settings today and I noticed the flash pops up a lot when I don't really want it :o
I know there's a setting on the dial where the camera doesn't use the flash for natural photos, but I tried using the portrait setting for a blurred background effect and the flash kept popping up when i didn't need it
How would I turn off the flash in this instance?

I don't think you can turn the flash off in the automatic modes... maybe bumping the ISO up a little bit would make the camera not choose to use a flash... I do most of my shooting in P mode... you have complete control of the camera outside of the shutter speed and aperature.. its sets those automatically, but you have control over the flash and everything else.

It's in the menus somewhere - I have seen it.

set Custom Function 5 to option 2, so it doesn't fire. CF5:2 for short. ;)

According to the manual, Custom Functions only work in the "Creative Zone" modes, and CF5 only controls the AF assist beam. As I understand it, setting CF5:2 will disable the use of the attached flash for AF assistance, but the camera will try to use any connected Speedlight. CF5:1 would disable the AF assist beam regardless of other connected flashes- it would not, however, disable the flash for actual picture use. In the "Basic Zone" the flash is disabled in the landscape, sports, and flash off zones, in the "Creative Zone" I believe the flash will not come on automatically: you must use the flash release button on the left of the camera.
