How do you decide whether to by just the body or get the kit also for the Canon Rebel XT?

I am considering the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras or the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras; any thoughts/suggestions?

Neither is wide once you factor in crop.

The 18>125 sigma has gotten some great reviews, equivilant quality to canon low end glass with a much cheaper price.

Is there a need to get one with IS?

Is this the one you are referring to:

I don't think the two lenses you mentioned come as part of a "kit." My Rebel came with their 18-55mm lens, which is not bad really, given that its only a hundred bucks or so--it was a good place to start, though I've gotten a few others since then.

Your lens choices have to do with what type of photos you take or want to try taking. Since I was a complete beginner when I bought my Rebel, I found this web site really helpful in learning about and selecting lenses for my camera: http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/300D/EOS_300D_lenses.html

Since I don't do big-picture landscapes, wide and ultra-wide lenses are not my first choice (though I think that canon has a couple of new digital specific ones that may be offered as part of a "kit" package).

I have the 28-105mm lens. It's quite good quality considering the price and a good all-around lens. Some people I know use it almost exclusively. I'd say that this one along with the 18-55mm would make a good "starter" package.

I have a Canon 50mm f-1.8 lens, mostly for portraits and for macros (with extension tube). Again, a very good lens for the price (under 100.00), but again, it all depends on how you'll use it.

I also have a Tamron 28-300mm lens. I like the wide range, but the quality is not all that good (not all that expensive, so quality matches price pretty closely). The have a newer 28-200mm that I've heard good things about.

And finally, I have a Lensbaby, soft focus lens. It is supposed to mimic the affect of a Holga camera -- a really specific type of effect. Not everyones cup of tea. You can learn about them and see the types of photos they take in the Lensbaby Friends forum at: http://www.lensbabies.com/\

Hope this is of some use. David

Actually I am thinking of going with just the body and buying a lens separately; not the starter kit.

Do you have the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras or the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras?

The kit lens isn't too bad if you know and understand its limitations.

Agree, just given my interests as of now, I think the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras or the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Standard Zoom Lens might work best.

Any need for the IS?

IS is really only useful for slow exposures and longer focal lengths. 135mm almost qualifies.

Personally, I have the 18-55 lens and am building my collection around fast - aperture lenses. Soon I hope to obtain a 50mm f1.8/f1.4 and a 28mm f2.8 plus of course a flash and either the battery grip or a spare battery. I might also obtain lens hoods for all my lenses.

Anyone have the Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Autofocus Lens on their Rebel XT?

That's the lens I'm talking about.
