When I was in publishing in the 80s, I used to do lots of photo-illustrations for magazine article title pages. Most of them were just product shots - doing anything fancy meant paying a fortune to the printers to strip images together. If only we'd had Photoshop!

This is a leaf photo that got carried away. :p Photoshop fans might want to speculate on why it has a slightly unreal look.

Bill

Leaves after a rain. 1/60, f4, 8mm (48mm equiv.). Diffused fill flash is from the upper left.

I guess in Netspeak that would be "defused". I defused my flash so it wouldn't go off. :p

Nice one Adiseshanaik, the leaves stand out well against the black.

Following the convention that (parts of) plants that are not obviously flowers end up in the leaf thread, I have a couple. First a plant growing in the water:

Great to see that you folks are still posting shots to this thread - and they said it wouldn't last, LOL. Also good to see some newcomers to the forum. Great shots everyone and thank you for sharing.

Here is one I took today, Canon S2IS.

Wombat - that shot of the red leaves is superb.

In the image below, I was testing the world's cheapest flash diffuser. I found a sheet of very thin plastic foam that's used for wrapping and taped it onto my flash so it billowed out in front, then handheld the flash at the upper left. I think the plant is wild rhubarb - it's a very large leaf anyway.

Edit: forgot to mention - for those with automatic flashes, the extended diffuser spills too much light onto the sensor for proper exposure. You have to go manual for best results.

Bill thank for the extremely generous comments - really appreciated. This particular plants is a subject that I return to on a regular basis. It is in a public park and is backed by conifer trees that provides the black background and when the sun is shining makes the leaves glow. I do think it pays to know your subject and the effect of light as well as your camera.

I like the effect of your flash diffuser. The leaf detail is captured but the all important shadows are not washed out by the flash. Shall have to try this on the S2IS that often "asks" for flash to be used.

Erad – lovely shots, I particularly like the compositions with the diagonals – nicely captured.

Scott6 – what a great leaf “portrait” the dark background sets it off a treat.

Thank for sharing everyone.

Here is a mosaic of leaves, Canon S2IS.

Fall is the time when the leaves fall, which explains why it is called Fall. To attract your attention to this feat the leaves change to snappy colors, which is what this posting is about.

The following were shot in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, on the Whiskey Rapids trail.

A few berries that (for a change :)) aren't red:

(well, only one is red, and it is hiding).

Bruuen, I really like this picture. One of those abstract shots that some people (me included) will love, others might think, why would he take a picture of that? Funny how we see things differently. I really like it -- now I'm inspired to look for shots like that myself!

bruuen

thanks for the compliment toriaj!

when shooting, i definitiely try to find the 'beauty' in anything. What made that particular shot stand out for me was; i was in a forest surrounded by yellow, red, green and brown. When my eye caught a glance of the few white logs, they really stood out! I think the colours compliment the white nicely in that photo, and i love the accent of the blurred white log in the back.

I'm impressed that a small little camera like the Canon SD550 can handle photos like this...down the road though, i'm eyeing the Rebel XTi to have a little more control than what the SD offers.

The other pictures I really like. I love the rainpuddle one. Good subject. I also like how there is nothing right in the center of the pictures.

Love the symetry in this - what is Orton?
It's a technique where you basically combine a crisp shot with an out of focus shot. It gives it a wonderful glow, but unlike a simple blur you retain detail.

It's a technique where you basically combine a crisp shot with an out of focus shot. It gives it a wonderful glow, but unlike a simple blur you retain detail.

See link...

http://www.naturephotographers.net/articles0106/dw0106-1.html

Wow - I think this is a bit beyond me! At least - I don't think I could grasp it from just reading - I would need someone to physically sit with me - my reading is not my strongest point!! Also - I don't understand layers etc anyway

It's really not too difficult, and the site I posted explains it quite well...

Here is the step-by-step recipe for making Orton images in Photoshop:

1. Open any image you wish to try the technique on. Make a duplicate of the image (Image>Duplicate). Close the original image.
2. Lighten the image as follows: Image>Apply Image… then in the dialog box that comes up change the bending mode to “Screen” and the Opacity to 100%. This will give you an appropriately overexposed image.
3. Duplicate this overexposed image (Image>Duplicate).
4. Blur this second image (Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur… and in the dialog box use a Radius setting of 15 to 50 pixels – the higher the pixel setting the blurrier the photo and the more ‘painterly’ the image… but you can go too far!). Experiment with different settings, for my tastes and for the size of my digital files (50-100 megabytes) a radius of about 25 pixels works perfect.
5. Now select the move tool from the Photoshop tool bar (or just press “v” on your keyboard for quicker access to the move tool). Hold down the “shift” key and use your mouse to drag and drop the blurry image onto the sharp one (don’t let go of the shift key until after you release the mouse button or the images won’t be in perfect alignment).
6. Bring up the layers palette in Photoshop (F7 is the keyboard shortcut). Under the word “Layers” in the layers palette will be a menu box of blending modes. Change the blending mode from “normal” to “multiply”.
7. Now “flatten’ the two layers by pressing “CTRL+E” or by clicking on the sideways triangle in the layers palette to select ‘flatten image’.

It doesn't work well for all photos, but it's a nice effect for some. Especially when making large prints. I've also noticed it generally works better on images with softer light.

Forgive me - so what is the purpose of all this?? It seems you have softened my photo and added some warmth?? It seems an awfull long way around to do a simple task - or is there more to be gained than this?
(bear in mind I mostly prefer natural looking photos - maybe the odd soft frame)

Thanks Paul. It makes me really happy to "hear" you say that. I never though of myself as an artist but photography is an art so I guess it makes me an artist.

That's a cool collection of close up leaves. Wonderful detail. Were they cropped at 100%? Cool little boarder as well.

Pointing the camera and clicking the shutter and then posting here is a shooter. An artist takes the shot and makes it look like something special. I havent seen one of your photos that was anything other than breathtaking. As for my leaves here, there was no cropping. They are the four shots as they came from the camera and given some sharpening in Photoshop then assembled and reduced to fit here. The leaves were actually stuck to a glass patio door and shot with only the backlight.

Lovely, Brian, just lovely.

Bynx, I really like the tree bark. I like the idea of a set rather than a single shot, like you also did with the leaves. But I find that the frame distracts from the photos, especially the bark ones, probably because the colors are so close. My preference is for a simple and plain frame to offset the photo.

Bynx

Thanks for your comments Adam. Not many people say anything about my postings. But you are the third to say you didnt like the frame. I dont either. Its a work in progress and history now. I feel like the pics need something to give them a finished look. Ive changed the frame to something more simple.

In my opinion the center of your picture shouldnt be out of focus. The main subject so large and centered and so out of focus spoils the shot. Just doesnt look right to me. Try to make clear what your main subject is. Id never guess it was the top of the trees.

I think the green leaf is really spectacular against its background. However, I think the bright red leaf on the left detracts from the green leaf because its too bright for the rest of the background. If you crop off the bright red ones its much better in my opinion.

Thanks so much. I generally use the same text and boarder for most of my photos. It's simple, easy and maybe a bit elegant.

Mike, you sure got close to those drops and grass. One thing I may suggest is that it's too centered with not much going on to the left or right. Try cropping it vertically to bring more attention to the drops. Hope you don't mind, I did it for you:

Hi Folks

Have been wondering for a while where to post shots of leaves. They don't really seem to fit with the flower thread and they are not always that abstract. So here is a new thread for all you budding :D leaf enthusiasts who are lurking out there.

I'll make a start with a tricolor geranium leaf.

I took several tricky shots of our Red dogwood - it's just budding nicely at the moment.
Lighting was not clever - not enough and not clear enough!!
I used my 17-70 with its wonderfull macro, and I used my new (2nd hand but mint) 28 - 200 which isn't macro but does a reasonable close up.
It's also not quite as sharp as the 17 - 70 but nevertheless rendered this image that I am not unhappy with...

Yes, I'm quite impressed with my new lens, looking forward to getting out and about with it a little more in the not too distant future :)
Been a bit busy with other things lately - I'm sure you've probably heard about the building site we're currently living in

Yes I did hear about it - got any pictures? I took lots of shots of ours last year dead boring really for most people but I have to say they have been very useful in showing where wires & pipes went that have been subsequently buried in walls & floors etc. Its very useful to look at pictures when drilling into finished walls to put up shelves & cupboards.

Here are a few leaf pic's taken recently:

Not a lot of interest in this thread it seems, but I love shooting outdoors, which usually includes leaves somewhere ;),
so here is another leaf shot, could've been "Tree" or "Leaf", however I choose "Leaf" :).
I really love the light through the leaves in this shot :D:

Dappled shadow, light & leaves, a glimpse of the valley below through the leaves of the last tree:

Enjoy. :)

Hmm - this is a more quiet thread - I admit I haven't been here either for a while
anyway: Here's a Plant I have in my garden - I cannot remember it's name - but I bought it for it's colours throughout the year.
if anyone knows what it is - I would appreciate the name as I forgot it!!! :)

Turo - I like the viewpoint of that shot - nice strong green colour too.

It was raining this morning - so I popped out and took a couple of shots of my Purple Smoke again...here's one, I like to get it as close as poss straight off the camera ~ this one is resized, tiny bit of USM to compensate for lower res. (amount 40, radius 1, threshold 1) framed.
I decided on a manual focus as Auto wanted the front edge as the focal point which threw too much of the back
out of focus - personal choice

There are some lovely shots on this thread recently well done guys. I had a go at some hand held leaf shots with my kit lens at the weekend. No time to PP just a small crop on this one. The leaves were quite small only about a couple of centemeters across & I hadn't realised they were so hairy until I looked at the images.

Thanks Geoff. It was the afternoon sun light that I couldn't resist so I just wandered round the garden looking for opportunities. That one was in a hanging basket that had seen better days so I moved into a shaft of sun to get the best illumination I could.
What happened to your D80? you seem to have been without it for quite a long time now.

Lovely! It it almost looks like there's a soft focus filter but there isn't. Great colors in it as well.

Here are grapes with some leaves. I would have put it in the Food Thread (http://dcresource.com/forums/showpost.php?p=334593&postcount=172) but it seems that that thread doesn't get much notice, so it's here now.
