Wombat ~Dyslexic senior moment!! - I keep forgetting the name of the flower - check it on the flower thread - there's one of it there with the blue background
Then come back and put me out of my misery!!!
I like your abstract!
Geoff - It's a Fuchsia and I never would have guessed that.

Some nice leaves have appeared here recently. Geoff, Wombat, you must have some hidden collaboration going, because you both posted some nice red-and-green compositions.
I'll stay with the red-green theme with some berry shots for today, from the European Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia). The tree is native to Europe but is doing very well over here in Canada. In fact, going by the amount of berries it produces, you could say it is a bit of an over-achiever:
http://photos21.flickr.com/33262312_85ec97f59a_o.jpg
This branch is literally loaded down with berries.
Here is a closer view at the berry-abundance:
http://photos23.flickr.com/33262318_5fa2e7b4ae_o.jpg
And if you look close enough, the berries look just like tomatoes:
http://photos22.flickr.com/33262329_9b0d72b419_o.jpg
BTW, flowers are specialized leaves, berries come from flowers, so clearly berries belong in the leaf thread :). That's my story, anyway.

Gerard - great Mountain Ash berry shots - the colour combination is a photographers dream and you have captured them beautifully. Just amazing how many berries a tree can produce without breaking so the birds are in for a treat this winter.

Wombat, nice palm leaves, I like the pattern they make. Looks a bit like a Chinese/Japanese fan. And it is always good to see hop leaves in thirsty weather like we are having here :).

Gerard - thank you for the kind remarks - greatly appreciated as always.
I liked your vine leaf and tendrils - a lovely composition with that all important diagonal, great greens and beautifully sharp.
Here is a very old rhubarb leaf - probably should be with the abstracts as it is more holes than leaf :) At times it looks to me like corroded metal sheeting.

Thanks, Wombat. That "corrugated" leaf is quite something. What makes it work so well is that you caught some green, un-corrugated leaves through the holes, which yields a great combination of colors. Well done.

Gerard - thats a big leaf and, as always, beautifully captured. It looks like a rhubarb plant but I have never seen one with such long leaves - must be the Canadian variety.
Here are some backlit leaves after the rain. I think the stem is a bit overexposed where the sun bounced off the water. Canon A80, macro mode, f/8.0, exp. 1/640s, exposure compensation -2/3. Not a brilliant composition but I was pleased with the depth of field and the colours.

Geoff C - thanks for the kind comments. I am probably too critical of my shots but it is all in an effort to improve my photography.
I came across this geranium a while ago and was struck by the wonderful purple edging to the leaves. A lot of sand grains on the leaf detracts somewhat.

Thanks for the very kind words - very much appreciated. The Nigella pod was a studio shot i.e. taken indoors with the Canon A80 atached to my Pc and the shots taken remotely. This permits the use of ISO 50 and eliminates all camera shake. For the black background see my recent posting on the perpetual flower thread.
Although studio shots lack that "real" feeling of an outdoor shot they do yield a more clean lines formal portrait. Some like one, some like the other - I like both :) It can be a source of fun when you have the photographic urge but the weather is too wet or cold.
I really like your shots and am pleased you have discovered the challanges of leaf photography. You have captured some great negative shapes in the first shot and I am wowed by the clarity and depth of field. The jumble shot as Gerard calls them is a real browse as the eye moves from one leaf to another.

Snowy Egret - Thanks for the kind comments. I like your lily pad shots very much as they are thought provoking. The first one looks like a pool of mercury and the second one is as you say quite alien - in both form and colour. Hard to believe it is a leaf and not a distant shot of a flying saucer. Wombat, nice seed pod, it somehow looks like a space station, probably because of the black background.
Gabo234, those are great first-leaf-shots. I especially like #1, an excellent composition.
Snowy Egret, you captured a fascinating metallic shine on those leaves, very nice.
Following Wombat, I also have a leaf that is trying to get dry:

Well, actually - whilst at my Mum's today I took a couple of leaf shots
This one just indoors in fact and quite low light - A-200, 1 1/4 sec @f3.5 ISO100 AS focal lenth 111mm equiv
Pretty much as it came off the camera - except for re-sizing... well this is how it looked so I didn't bother changing anything.
I did take a follow up shot with flash - I prefer this one though - but it was a quarter of a second hand held!!

Geoff C - thanks for the zebra leaves - I prefer the non-flash shot as well. Lovely composition filling the frame and great detail - some very subtle greens and the leaves are so structural especially where they join the stem.
bklasson - thansk for the ivy leaves - great detail and clarity and you have caught the wet sheen beautifully - thanks for sharing.
I have just noticed that we have "achieved" sticky thread status. I am not sure how or why or even what it means but it feels like an Oscar nomination. Thanks to you all who have contributed such wide ranging shots of the humble leaf.
On reflection it seems such an odd subject to merit its own thread. However, whenever you have the photographic urge and no suitable subject matter there are usually some leaves nearby whether in the city or the country.
Thanks everyone.
Here is a shot of a conifer with drops. It was a poor shot heading for the bin until I noticed the neat composition of drops which draws my eye into the shot. Canon A80, cropped to about 25% of the original, handheld, macro mode, Ap. f/3.5, exp 1/500s, exposure compensation -2/3.

Thanks to all for the the recent contributions - thank for sharing them with us.
gabo234 - great shot of the spider on leaf with raindrops. I like this composition which really gives the scale of the leaf and poses the question "what is happening" thus drawing me into the shot.
Jarod_Guan - what unusual and interesting perspective. Again well thought out composition with the fly in a "sweet" place and the leaf edge being echoed in the background and the wavy leaf edge all add to the dynamics.
Val123 - you caught the detail of the woodland floor really well. I like the contrast of the red again green - very vibrant and the colours are great. I think I might have moved the red berries away from the centre - just an idea to encourage the eyes to move around the shot. The indoor shot has such wonderfully subtle colours and lots of movement from the inter-crossing diagonals - even the background shares that dusky pink colour and all sharply captured. I have to admit I am currently suffering from serious S2IS envy.
Here is a composition "old leaf[s] on green leaf" shot I tried sometime ago and didn't it get to work. I am happier with this one. Canon A80.

Thanks for the kind words - much appreciated. I agree with you about the capabilities of the Canon S2 espicially in the very capable hands of Val. The shot of the pine tree against the blue sky has such impact and directness - smashing.
coldteablues - a lovely shot - it is amazing just how many "cinderella" shots we must miss. I suppose we all are looking for those special photo opportunities that have the WOW factor e.g. a fish eagle just catching a fish, etc. I find they are not that common and this makes me try to get the best out of more mundane shots in my environment. In your shot I like the variety of subtle colours, the arrangement of the leaves and of course the drops - a very satisfying shot.

Val the background definately highlights the foreground in your last shot, very nice composition, again very simple but effective. I must say that looking at your shots recently with the S2 I am begining to doubt my choice of an FZ20 you definately get a vibrancy of colour that I can rarely achieve.
Thanks for the kind words - much appreciated. I agree with you about the capabilities of the Canon S2 espicially in the very capable hands of Val. The shot of the pine tree against the blue sky has such impact and directness - smashing.
Thanks guys for your kind words, I am more than pleased with the S2 and having great fun with it. I was particularily pleased with the S2's handling of the pine tree shot.....appart from adding signiture there is no Processing it is straight from camera. (settings AV Priority, F4.5, 1/320, -1/3 Exp, FL 69.9mm. LM = Evaluative).
I have been away this weekend and currently sorting through around 300 shots ..........(various) a few of which I hope to share with you all over the next few days!
Wombat - love the shot of the dried Teasal leaf, it really does have an alien feel, the colour contrast with the green background is great.
coldteablues - love your 'all in a row' shot, again nice colour contrast.
Heres another one from the 'Lost in the Woods' series .....not actually leaves, but there are leaves in it.... Hope you like......

Geoff C - nice to have you back - your presence has been missed - like the shot of the Canna leaves - great colours and a clear shot.
Samegapiz - your Mysterious Leaves leaves IS very thought provoking - what are they? how big are they? are they that green? a photo that makes me asks questions and thus draws me in - thanks for sharing.

bklassen - that is one beautiful shot. Simple, great composition and clarity. Well spotted and well shot. I certainly have added this to my mental index of compositions - even if I have to set it up.
American Nomad - you've caught that water drop just right - I like the background; nicely out of focus which highlights the leaf. I wonder why the new leaves come with their own water drop?

Hi Folks
Geoff C - thanks for the rowan berries - a real touch of autumn colour. I have observed similar colour effects on a smoke bush in Autumn - isn't it wonderful - as though it had been painted - very nicely captured
bklassen - lovely almost abstract shot of the leaves against the sky - the brown against blue is such a great combination and the sun backlighting the centre leaf is a super focal point.
val - another great shot from your S2 IS [drool], so real you could almost reach out and touch the branch. Quite some camera and photographer.
meillana - what an excellent composition of the lily pads - the low angle and the depth of field really draw your eye into the shot.
Thanks to you all for your sharing.
Here are some elm leaves - I was attracted by the shaft of light spilling over the edge of the top leaf to give backlit, shaded and frontlit leaves all in one shot. Photography really teaches you to use your eyes. :) Canon A80.

Thats the MyColours function of the S2! :D You can choose one color by aiming at something with that color and pressing SET, and then everything but that color is black and white! Its so cool, you can be really creative with the S2. You can also swap colors, make red roses blue and whatnot.

Wow - a classy camera with amazing bells and whistles as well - got to have one :)
erad - thanks for posting your first macro shot on the leaf thread. A nice clear shot and good colour. I wonder [I say this as someone who rarely comments on others photographic skills, being an amateur myself, but you did ask :) ] but I wonder if it is a little bit overexposed. What did the histogram look like? Parts of the leaf and the second water drop from the bottom look a little harsh??
I have found with macros shots, at least on my Canon A80, that they nearly always require some adjustment of the exposure compensation downwards by at least a couple of notches. If your camera has this try switching to program mode and try the same shot tweaking the exposure compensation a few notches each way and compare the histograms. Anything below 90-95% marks on the histogram should be fine. Hope this is of use and please keep posting those shots, it is how we all learn - from one another.

I understand you would like the extra stuff the S2 gives you - but I would also hang on to the A-80 when that time comes.
I am sure you are spot on in your analysis. I have had the A80 for a couple of years now but only since joining this group have I really concentrated on what I do with it. Thanks to everyone's generosity of spirit, including yourself, I have learnt so much about photography, myself and my camera. I used to get so phased by all the manual settings and now find that my hands automatically press the right buttons and I can concentrate more on the subject. At times it almost feels like the camera is simply an extension of my eyes - I look - find something that attracts me - and the camera takes the photo. Must be Zen and the art of the camera :).
I think that I have learnt that the 4 most important things for my photographic endeavours are the quality of the camera's lens, the light quality and intensity, swivel LCD, and of course the grey stuff between my ears.
The A80 has a great lens for macro work and as you quite rightly say it is the extras on the S2 like the optical zoom, image stabilization and ultra-macro that would be icing on the cake. I will be staying with the A80 for a while yet but hadn't considered keeping it when and if I move to the S2. However, it is relatively compact and we do have this long lasting relationship, so perhaps it should stay.
Here's another leaf shot, "Hole in a leaf", Canon A80.

Wombat "Holey leaf " - WomBatman.. sorry, that image of Batman & Robin just came to me inspired by your leaf shots. I have to say you have a real eye for a striking image from nowhere. Who would have thought the humble leaf would have been so interesting. Yes as Geoff said I'm sure you will do great things with an S2 IS but with this quality of image & your obvious empathy with the camera I bet you will be loathed to get rid of the A80. I made the same transition recently from a point & shoot (Olympus C40Z) to a superzoom (Panasonic FZ20) and whilst they are very different cameras to yours I kept the Olly & do still use it. There are times when I just want a small camera to carry round & there are odd times when the Olly just takes a better shot (its generally better at capturing colourful shots particularly at wide angles). So unless cash is very tight I'd stick with the old friend when upgrading & keep up with the leaves they're great.

Phill D - Thank you very much for the extremely generous and thoughtful comments - all very much appreciated. LOLs at the Wombatman, etc. Perhaps I was needing the objective comments made by yourself and Geoff C to put things in perspective. It is I suppose easy to become influenced by the results of other cameras, yet overlook what you are achieving already.
I really value the observations made about keeping a camera that you have used for a long time. I quess it is like having a screwdriver and then buying a power screwdriver - there are jobs for each and they are not mutually exclusive. Thanks for the reality check.
Here is todays shot - not a leaf - but some red rose hips in the autumn sunshine. I am finding that the autumn sunlight is much more sympathetic to those difficult saturated colours, in particular, than the full summer sun. I suppose the sun being further away means the light intensity is less? It certainly seems to have a warmer & gentler quality. Canon A80.

Join you all?
First off, I am completely awestruck at the incredible photos I'm seeing in all the galleries here. Kudos to you all, with many thanks for sharing such beauty.
Since I'm new here, I'm not sure if this is okay, but while I anxiously await delivery of my new KM A200, I thought I might share a shot or two that I took back in the olden days. You remember them, right? Film and SLRs? ;)
Not sure if this belongs with leaves or butterflies. Decisions, decisions...

And while this isn't exactly leaves, it's not flowers either:

Thank you for allowing me to share some of my work with you, although I have a lot to learn and a very long ways to go.

Chilious - lovely shots - I especially like the sick leaf nice backlighting and those spots certainly add something new.
eaglssong - of course you can join us - we were all new once and very friendly. Thanks for the leaf shot [with butterfly] - good composition and colours. The cone shot is my favourite as you say the blue sky highlights the cones and the branches frame the whole shot. I think it fair to say that we are all learning from one another. I know I find inspiration in every shot.
Thanks for sharing you shots.
My shot of the day is a wisteria branch and cloudy sky. Canon A80.

Oh my goodness - who would have thought leaves could be so interesting?!!
I caught myself looking into the leaves of a tree as I walked under it today
thinking - "don't you just love it when the sun shines on them from behind"
Chilleous - love your sunlight leaf, the sick leaf is interesting, and the
berries are nice and colourfull
Snowdr - lovely Autumn colours - I specially like the one against the blue sky
makes it stand out.
American Nomad - nice idea with the rain - I've pinched your idea...
Wombat - your Maranta or prayer plant - I assume they're shadows again
looks great!
eaglssong/Anne - welcome to the thread and to the forum - nice one with
the butterfly & the other one is prety interesting. While I'm here -
hope all goes well with the new camera - please please feel free to ask
me anything about your A-200 if I can help I will - either here - or for
quicker replies go to my e-mail (in the profiles).
Today I was going to do some painting in the garden - but it was raining - so
I took a couple or three shots featuring the water droplets (see abstract thread)
here's some leaves from our usually pretty pink flowers in the garden...

No PP other than re-size. Admittedly for the rose I popped

Geoff C - Great rain drops - proving even on a rainy day there are wonderful shots to be taken.
Funny thing that Maranta leaf - they are not shadows but areas of the leaf that seem to contain chorophyll or perhaps more chorophyll than the remainder.

JTL - good to have you back again - that is one very colourful leaf, blood red and a chalky green - great contrast, texture and shape.
Glen - Welcome to the leaf thread and thanks for your unfurled fern, again what great colours the green and the chocolate brown and I like the composition with the diagonal echoes. The second shot is another good one - great colours, plenty of interest in the patterns and all in one leaf - nice capture.

Anne - I'm sure you are more than capeable - but take your time - there's
quite a lot to that camera. I was quite sad - but then again not - it's a
hobby after all! - I took many test shots at different settings under near
identical conditions. It depends on your tastes as to how you settle with the settings. Set to Auto, however, it does a pretty good job. I can bring you up to speed on it's peculiarites once you've had a play.
Meanwhile - here's one I took in Las Vegas back in April...

The second one is a large plant at work. The interior lights are off and only the window skylight illuminates it. I used 1/25 at f2.8 with the Panasonic FZ20 on a tripod. Hope the subtleties of color come through in the post.

Wow Bill,
That's some crispy stuff there. You sure can catch the dew - I can almost feel the 6AM wakeup call. Brings back some vivid memory of an early morning about 18 years ago catching dew like one crispy spring mountian morning. Really a nice feeling to capture like that.:p

Snaz - nice autumn leaf there - also, for some reason, don't see the G6

Bill Markwick - great wet leaf shot - nice crisp focus too, but I particularly liked the office plant shot!

non leaf shots!!

Thanks Geoff, I am over the moon with both cameras, as you know have only had the 20d a couple of weeks, I really could do with some decent weather to give it a real test (hopefully this weekend :) . But so far so good.
in the mean time a hand held shot of a stinging nettle taken with the 70-300mm Sigma lens (didnt want to get too close to this one :D ) hope you like........

Sorry if I uploaded them too big...still playing with the right dimentions...
Hello all,
The fall color is unusually intense this year in the San Bernardino (CA) mountains. I shot these oak leaves near Arrowbear at the 7000ft level on October 15.

Such great shots everyone!
We had a Callicarpa at our old house - now we've bought one for this
and we're really pleased - it will grow to look lovely -
these berries are in the winter - here's the whole plant (with some little
flowers around the bottom that I will pop into the flower thread...

- but they are very small....

Hi Folks
I cannot turn my back on you guys for a minute before another crop of super shots are posted. I haven't been able to devote as much time as I would wish to this thread so it is great to know you folks are keeping things going.
It seems to me that there is a lot of learning going on here? Is it just me or do others pick up on pleasing compositions and try them out for themselves. If so the thread has moved on from just being somewhere to post shots to somewhere to get ideas and inspiration - which is really great.
My shot for today is tree bark, Canon A80.
Thanks for all your contributions.
regards

That first one looks like Denver Broncos colors!
here's another form me...some leaves and berries

Coldrain - Love those colours - the filter helps I guess...
Kristy - lovely pics - simple yet so effective.
Val 123 - I've never got around to shootig Holly - yours has come out really well.
Anne - you and your new A-200 have gelled together really well - I would be
interestd to hear some of your findings and settings when and if you are up
for it.
Wombat - some great subtle colours in that bark - I must try some bark photos sometime.
Ok. Another plant we bought recently ~ a Cotinus Grace, it has these
lovely red leaves right now - these pics are a bit too soon as it hasn't
had time to settle in properly yet
First - in it's place in the back garden...

Being aware that the reds don't always come out quite right
or as you predict - I took 2 shots - one a bit under exposed.
I can't make my mind up which is better...
Comments welcome.
