Back when I was in college, I worked on a crew that set up bigtop, aka, "circus", tents. The length and diameter of the "nails" leads me to believe they're anchor spikes, i.e., the "tent pegs" that anchor the guy wires that hold up the center poles. (They're commonly used to anchor the rides at at parking lot "carnivals" too.)
