View Full Version : S2 lens cap or conversion lens adapter & 58mm filter?

As a sit and anxiously await the arrival of my S2 IS from Dell, it gives me time to think of miniscule little details that I probably wouldn't think of normally. The latest thought concerns that horrible S2 hanging lens cap. I've got a Sony camcorder that has a lens cap that hangs from a tether like that too and I really hate it. If I don't tuck it between my palm and the camcorder, I can ALWAYS hear it knocking around in the video. Very annoying. Since I will be shooting video with the S2 also - I anticipate the same problem.

I was wondering just how practical it would be to keep the conversion lens adapter/lens hood (LAH-DC20) permanently attached to the S2 - with a 58mm filter to protect the lens of course? I've already accepted the fact that this sucker isn't going to fit in my pocket, but can I still keep it 'beltable' (I just made that term up :D )? Meaning - able to put it in one of those smallish bags that have a shoulder strap and a belt attachment? JTL gave a link (in another thread) to a GREAT Tamrac bag that apparently works perfectly with the S2 (without lens adapter of course) here (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Tamrac-Camera-Bag-4394-/sem/rpsm/oid/66292/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do). Something very similar to this would be perfect.

Also, if this turns out to be a good idea, is there an aftermarket lens cap available that will work with those 58mm threads somehow (instead of relying on a clear filter to protect the lens)?

Thanks in advance, folks!

Hi.

Re the use of a lens cap for 58 mm filter threads. They exist check out ebay. I bought a canon one there for UK£ 2.50 inc postage just after I got my G5. Or pop down to your local camera shop and have a look in there.

Re use of the extra lens, I keep a sky light or similar on all the time, saves problems with accidents that want to cover your lens with ice cream or fingermarks. Gets scratched just get a new one. Cheaper than getting the camera repaired.

All my SLR camera lenses have filters on them and the video camera for that purpose. The only camera that does not, cannot take filters. So I have to take extra care with it.

Here's the other bag that I just got which perfectly fits the S2 with the adapter attached, the tele converter, the wide-angle converter, slave flash and bracket, uv filter, polarizer, four extra batteries and my lens care kit and cables. It's the Tamrac 702. I road tested it this weekend it it performed well. Plus, you can get add-on attachments for it (water bottle, extra compartments). A great day-hike solution...But...I believe that Tamrac discuntinued this bag...which is a total shame because it fits the above items so perfectly! I got it B&H for $40...but they don't stock it anymore. I've seen it on other sites for over $60 (way too much), but if you see it cheap, you can't go wrong...here it is, way overpriced though: http://www.tristatecamera.com/LookAtAll-4g7uwbnl-TAM702FGN-1-00630141-0-store.php.html

The bag below bag is similar in size (may be a litle bigger), but I haven't seen it in person so I can't vouch for it...http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&kw=TA5201BL&is=REG&Q=&O=productlist&sku=131805

Hmmm im not sure about others but i think the lens cap stays on pretty secure, it will stay on as long as you dont bother it. its like that so the lens wont get damaged if you accidently forget to take it off

example. It always happens to me when i accidently press the shutter button in playback mode.

That is EXACTLY the combination of gear that I want to carry! Once I buy it all, of course... :p Since it sounds like you carry your S2 with the adapter attached (like I intend to as well), may I ask what you do for a lens cap? Obviously, a clear filter is a minimum requirement, but do you have anything on there beyond that (like a... lens cap ;))? The reason I ask is that on that annoying Sony camcorder lens cap I was talking about before, I DO have a 37mm video clear filter on there to protect the lens, but that makes the lens cap even less secure and it gets knocked off way too easily. A totally different situation with the S2 - I know - because the S2 lens cap seems to just go snuggly over the whole 'shaft' of the lens housing (instead of the little teeth that go INside the lens on the Sony. Anyway...But...I believe that Tamrac discuntinued this bag...which is a total shame because it fits the above items so perfectly! ...

I agree - this one looks good as well... I think I'll check it out. :D If I can't find the 702 for a decent price anywhere, this may be 'the one.'

Thanks again for the help and the GREAT suggestions! :D

its like that so the lens wont get damaged if you accidently forget to take it off

example. It always happens to me when i accidently press the shutter button in playback mode.Ahhhh... now it makes sense to me. I didn't think of it that way before, but now I can visualize it. If you accidentally extend the lens while the cap is on, it just gets pushed off, eh? Nice. But I still don't want it dangling around during video shooting, and if I detach the lanyard, I know it's just a matter of time before I lose it. Now I realize that I'm essentially asking for the impossible (a lens cap that doesn't dangle when removed, but won't get lost if it gets knocked off)! I guess I got spoiled with my A70 (no lens cap).

Oh well, I'm 99% sure that I'll be leaving the adapter on anyway (with a filter to protect the lens). Now, I just need to figure out how to protect the filter! How big (in diameter) is the adapter in relation to the part of the lens that the lens cap normally rests on? Will the lens cap fit on the adapter too?

Thanks again! I learn so much on this site!

Since it sounds like you carry your S2 with the adapter attached (like I intend to as well), may I ask what you do for a lens cap? I was originally going to get a screw on lens cap, but when I'm shooting outdoors on a sunny day, I like to leave the polarizer on...but...there are no threads on the front of my polarizer to screw a cap into. So, I got a "push-on" lens cap. This was the only one I found (granted, I didn't look that hard) and it fits rather snuggly. If it were just 1mm maybe 2mm bigger it would be perfect...http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=125291&is=REG

I just noticed on the B&H website that they have a 60mm one as well. I'm going to go over to the store sometime this week and see if that one fits better. I'll PM you with the results...but remind me if I forget...

I purchased the lens adapter (thru Canon) and then a UV filter at Ritz Camera. They also have lens caps that snap into the filter and it does not have a teather. I too do not like the pop on cap. I would have been nice to have a "real" lens cap. But if you leave on the lens adapter and a filter, you can use the snap in cap. I think I paid $3.50 for the cap. You can buy them on-line at ritzcamera.com along with the filters (which are a pretty good deal also).

O.K...

I tried this 60mm push-on cap at B&H and it works very well: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=125292&is=REG.

I am now able to safely keep my S2 lens adapter on all of the time with a UV filter and a polarizer in daylight. I also picked up one of these cheap teathers http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=48043&is=REG. It's also a breeze to slip it off if you want to get the cap completely out of the way for any reason...

I know this thread is a bit old, but hopefully this will be helpful.

I keep the adaptor and a UV on the camera all the time, with a hama 58mm supersnap lens cap. These have a kind of spring-loaded clip, so they stay on better than a push on.

I got both adapters, the 52 and the 58mm just because they look cool for now. I got the 58 lensmate and some cheapie 52 off e-bay. They both seem to fit the same. I plan to get a telephoto and a wide angle if i can ever decide wich to get.
