Hi.
I just bought a 2x telephoto lens for my FZ5.... If I go full 24x zoom inside the house then the camera focuses correctly. If I go outside and try to focus on anything then the camera has a very hard time of it and won't focus in the the object no matter how big it is...
Here's an example of a test I performed: I try to focus on the wall of a school accross the street and the camera seems to have it in focus for a freaction of a second and then it go out of focus.
I've got it sports mode and I tried all focus modes without any luck. If this is a problem with the FZ5 then maybe the FZ20 with manual focus would better....
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Denis
Does your camera focus well outside without the 2x telephoto being attached?

DenisYou didn't say which telephoto? What's the brand, model number? When I first bought a Canon TL-55, the unit I received wouldn't focus at all; it turned out to simply be a bad lens. Another thing: When you focus on the school wall, are you just shooting the wall itself? The focusing mechanism usually likes to find a vertical high-contrast edge for locking in, or maybe a horizontal one. And what distance are you from the objects you're trying to pull in?

Hi.
Yes, the camera does an excellent job of focusing without the telephoto lens. ( I got a great shot of a blue heron in flight at quite a distance with perfoect focus at 12x...) It will also focus properly with the 2x telephoto lens on up to a certain point...then it won't focus anymore. I don't know much about cameras but you'd think that it wouldn't make a difference...right?
The lens is a merkury optics 2x AF High Definition telephoto lens
Lens Elements/Groups: 2/2 (All Glass Multi-Coated)
Maybe there's a reason that Panasonic doesn't make any telephoto lenses for the FZ5 but does for the FZ20????
Most of the telephoto lenses that I see recommended are 5 elements in 3 groups. My guess is that the problem is in your Telephoto and not the camera. Here are two sites for telephoto information

Thanks for all the help....it was the crappy lens...
Got the Canon TC-DC58N 1.75x and it works perfectly. I called the company that sold me this "FZ5" kit on ebay and they said that the manufacturers sometimes change their specs without advising them....anyway, hopefully the return will go well. They'd sent me 52mm filters and a non-working lens. I'm going to get scr#wed on the customs, duties (Canada) and shipping it back to them, unless they really stand by their customers. Should have known better....
:-)
Thanks again.
