I just got my Rebel XT two days ago, and WOW, that is one awesome camera. All i had before was an SD500, and i used the long exposure during nightime to experiment with light. On the SD500, you could set the long exposure for up to 15 seconds. Is there any way to do that with the Rebel XT? I would think there is, but i cant figure it out for the life of me. Please help! :)

You have to switch to TV or M mode and just use the scroll dial to up the shutter speed to 30 seconds. There is also a bulb exposure which I have not messed around with at all, I have read the manual it seems that you can do prolonged exposers past 30 seconds as well... I was hoping someone else could elaborate on this a tad. From what the manual says in bulb exposure the shutter will remain open for as long as you hold the shutter release down?

I got the impression, from a review or a magazine, that if you had a remote shutter switch, you could trip the shutter and leave it open all night. I may be mistaken.

This is how it works on SLRs, in Bulb mode you either press the button and the shutter remains open as long as you keep it presses, but this won't do you any good becouse you can't stay for say 20 mins with your finger on the camera, plus there's the camera shake which of course you'll inflict. So, the solution is to buy a remote control which, as you said, gives you the possibility to press and lock the shutter for as long as you please (but check the manual for battery life during Bulb exposures).

Actually i was playing with my XT last night and found that in manual mode, just turn the dial TO THE LEFT rather than the right, and it goes from 1 second, all the way up to 30, and after 30, you put it into bulb mode. It works great btw, i got some excellent exposures. You can also do this in Av mode i believe.
