View Full Version : S2 Plastic tripod mount + AA batteries = trouble?

I have another thought about the S2 after reading Jeff's review. He found that the tripod mount has plastic threads rather than metal. This means that you are going to strip out the mount sooner or later, depending on how often you screw on your tripod.
A good solution would be to just leave the tripod shoe on your camera all the time, but since this camera takes AA batteries that you need to remove to replace/recharge, you can't do that. The battery door won't open without removing the tripod shoe.
To me, this looks like a fairly serious problem. Am I worrying too much?

Are you thinking too much? Yes... I think it will be fine, unless you don't thread the thing right and force it. I usually hand tighten anyway... it's probably not going to wear out... unless you do something really stupid.
That being said, this WAS a terrible decision. A metal mount would have cost pennies... if that... it couldn't have been cost, and weight might be 5 grams at the most... I just can't figure it out. It is NOT a make or brake deal for me by any means.

Here's a silly idea...
Look at the bottom of the S1 IS (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_s1-review/camera-bottom.jpg) and the S2 IS (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_s2-review/camera-bottom.jpg). Are you now thinking what I'm thinking...? Those two tripod mounts look very similar (screws in roughly the same places, blah blah blah...). Is there any chance the metal mount from the S1 will fit in the S2??
Just an idea. I would only do it AFTER I strip out my S2 of course (warranty voiding etc)....

I do not understand why there seem to be so much concern over the plastic tripod mount. My A80's is plastic and I have had it attached to the tripod on numerous ocassions. The treads are very course. There is no way they will become stripped unless it is forced on or really overtightened. Yes, a metal mount woud be nice, but I would not make this any kind of show stopper when making my decision for an S2 IS. Make your decision based on the camera's performance, not the tripod mount. Mine is on order from Dell.
