Canon Powershot s230 cannot read pictures

I have this camera for about 9 months now that I got it from a friend. This is the second time that I try to download my pictures to my computer and it says that Camera is not properly connected or turned on.
After trying again it gets through and shows no picture in it. The first time this happened I moved the cable and worked but now it shows completly empty. I took more pictures to test and still does not whow in my computer. But all appears fine in my display screen.
Coud that be a cable problem? is anybody familiar with that?

I know that I had a similar problem with a different camera manufacturer. What I found to be the easiest, was to purchase a card reader ($20) then you just take out the memory card, pop it into the reader and download from there. It is so much easier, and doesn't use up your batteries. You can buy them pretty much anywhere.
