this may be a newbie question but is it normal for there to be a bit of play in the lens mount interface?

on my rebel xt (second one after a defect) when i lock the kit lens on i am able to rotate the lens probably a mm or two in either direction...is this a normal occurrence? does it happen more with plastic mounts than metal mounts? do others have it with the kit lens?

I havent gone into a shop to check out the store models since i noticed it on mine over the weekend.

I am pretty sure this is normal. My 10D does the same thing, just a little play there. I notice it most when I mount a lens to the tripod and touching the body moves the body a little.

I don't think a little play makes a lot of difference. Having said that, I haven't had any play at all on my Nikons. I'm still learning my XT so I haven't tried for movement yet.

I haven't experienced it with any of my lens yet on the XT.

from my cheapest lens to my most expensive lens, I don't see any play. Sorry.
But as it has been stated, I don't think it is a problem.

I just grabbed my D-rebel and gave it a yank. I have no play in it. I cannot get it to budge. Its a metal mount if that makes any difference.

I concur with my fellow colleagues, I have all metal lens mounts and I have no play at all. I do hate the rattle in the flash...something I would almost want returnt he camera for because it makes it feel like a 35 dollar camera...but what are you going do I think they all have the flash rattle...plus see that spec way back there, you have to squint, but that represents the last day to return my purchase... oh well... :D

They most likely do as its the internal metal slide braket on the flash. Mine does it also but never really paid it any attention.

My plastic 18 - 55 also has about a mill of play in it when mounted on my XT.

For what it is worth, I just tested my 20D and found no play with the lens mount. However all my lenses are now metal mounts, so that may make the difference.

Interestingly, I tried with my plastic-mounted kit lens (18-55) and that had play in it. I tried with a metal-mounted lens and that had no play. I suspect the plastic lens mounts aren't made as accurately.

I wonder how that compares to the EOS that came out with a plastic bayonet mount.
