Hello, Image quality is the most important factor for my decision. What camera gives the best image in this range?

Image quality can be highly subjective when comparing cameras of similar quality, and since there is no standardizing body to make a determination as to which is truely "best", you will have to go with opinions only. At any rate, give the Canon G6 a look...

It turns out that I can not afford a G6, but I can afford a s70. Would this be the next best camera?

if you don't care about size, age, etc, only picture. i would think an older slr camera or a 2nd hand slr.

I think you can get G6 for < 500 at Dell.

actually truth be told, I said 400 to 500 because I was worried people would think of MSRP. My real budget is close to 400. Think Panasonic FZ5 as the most expensive I can buy.

IMHO, the FX5 is one of the best cameras out there so if that's all you can afford, that's not a bad situation to be in :D Canon S70 is also stellar. Also, many people rave about the Fuji E550 and it can be had for less than $300.

If I could get a Canon Digital Rebel (300D) for about $400 would that be my best bet?
