View Full Version : Metering modes

Hi everyone, I'm a little confused about the different metering modes on my Canon A510 and I wondered if anyone could help. There are three different modes...'Evaluate', 'Centre weighted averaging' and 'Spot'. I was really wondering what the difference was between these modes and perhaps examples of when you would use them. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

This the different way it uses to get your photo exposure evaluation.
Evaluate : it uses the whole photo area to get a relative exposition (from the darken to the lighten areas)
centerweight : use only the center area to do same.
spot : mesurement on your very center area (auto focus one usually)
the last 2 are usefull when your subject's esposure is very different from the rest of your image..

also, centreweighted measures (roughly) 75%, so you might use it in most cases, it'll give you the right thing. spot metering is highly sensitive (just 1%) so watch out...don't recompose slighlty.
