For several months I have been wanting to get a Sony H1. A month ago I decided, next year I can buy a DSLR.

A couple days ago I thought, well, between the H1 and a 1 gig MS Pro, I will have $600+ in a camera that I will keep, but won't use alot once I get my SLR. I thought, hmmm.... I could save longer from mowing lawns, and get a Digital Rebel XT, and then those lenses and CF cards will be usable with my next camera, and on and on.

I read Jeffs DR XT review and really like the camera. I want to shoot airshow (fast) type stuff so the high ISO, fast shot-to-shot times, and fast shutter lag are what I need.

I know no D-slrs have video, but in Jeff's review, in "Setup", in "menus" was this:
"Video system (NTSC, PAL)"

I'm just curious what this is.

Unfortunately Minolta lenses won't mount it, eh?

I think I'd rather spend $1000 on a D-slr this year (after saving some more), than $600 on an H1 this year and $1000 on an SLR next year. What lens, 300mm or so (to get up to 432mm on H1) would be decent at a decent price?

The video mode option is for the video display out function for reviewing images (it's mostly worthless)

No, minolta lenses won't mount to it though minolta makes a DsLR caleled maxxium 7d I think, has a nice built into sensor anti-shake system but its more expensive then canon.

the 70>200 F4 L is a great lens (112>320 once you apply mod) for the best quality images and sharpness (goes for like 600? but has great resale value L series lenses produce the best quality)

75>300 IS lens also good. Has Is which is good but lacks anywhere near the quality of sharpness edge to edge of the L lens.Runs 400 (120>480 with crop factor)

How are the Tokina and Tamron lenses B&H sells for "EOS"? I'm sure it's the old, "you get what you pay for" thing, but I can get a 70>300 mm for $149.

Would these be at least as good as a point& shoot's images, just to start? I can always buy more lenses later, but I'm financing by mowing lawns right now.

At ISO 800 & 1600, could i shoot 480 mm equivalent airshow shots without IS?

I liked the Minolta built-in IS, but the whole camera is alot more, so if I can get by without IS for a while, I'd sure like to!

You would be better off spending a little more for the Sigma 70-300 APO.

Yes you do typically get what you pay for.

NTSC and PAL in the menu relates to playing digital images from the camera directly onto a TV screen. You can switch the signal output to match that of the TV you happened to have.

As for the lens it is a rather shame that the Rebel's kit lens is not that great. I personally decided against it. I did buy the 50/1.8 II which is a fantastic lens, especially given the $70 price tag. It may be all plastic, but with proper care will last anyways. It's a great portrait lens. If you need a zoom to start with, give the Sigma 18-125 DC a try. I've not used it, but seems to be getting much better reviews than the Canon's kit lens.

Is there a lense review site? Or a lens tutorial site?

I am having a hard time figuring out what all the lens specs mean, usm, APO, etc, etc. I just need a good site to sit down with and read.

Thanks.

Also, I read in a camera magazine that the EF-S lenses were supposed to be cheaper. They mostly seem alot more expensive than the EF lenses, but maybe I missed something.

Thanks for any lens sites that would help me! I'm pretty comfused.
