View Full Version : Another Kodak DX7590 vs Canon S2 IS question

I have a Kodak DX7590 and am seriously considering going to the Canon S2 IS. After reading some reviews of both the Kodak and the new Canon, I think that I may not have given the Kodak the chance it deserved.

The problem I have with my Kodak is the "over-processing" of images. It seems like all of the Kodak cameras I've had were like this. Taking pictures of outdoor landscapes is where the problem shows most -- anything that's green looks like a blurry mess. Grass, leaves, etc. all seem to blur together into a fuzz. I'm far from a professional photographer; the only time I stray from "auto" is to do some shutter-priority photos at night. Maybe I haven't given this camera enough time yet.

The movie mode on the 7590 is ridiculous, but I think the movie mode on the Canon is equally as ridiculous with no compression included. 7-8 total minutes on an empty 1GB card is not useful.

The cheapest thing to do would be to just keep the Kodak, but from what I've read about the S2 and from playing with it in the store, I'm temped to go for it. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Blue

All I want to know is why you started a new thread when there already was one on this subject...

Actually, the other thread has jumped way off topic. Hoping someone has some insight on my questions.

I've been where you are so many times. Hey, I want this, but I'm hesitant to spend the money, and hey, I know what I have, I don't want to jump and end up with something worse.

I'll assure you that you will not get something worse! Even so, you can always return the canon if you need to. You need to be happy... and if you don't make the move, you'll always be asking yourself... so go ahead, get the canon, and try it out, I think you'll like it.

I can't think of many negatives on the S2... I kind of liked the old S1 LCD better(though it was smaller), I liked the s1 size/weight better, and I have no idea WHY they put a plastic tripod mount(would have cost them 5 cents ro make it metal. Other that that, it's got better zoom, better movie mode, the photos are better with excellent detail and color reproduction.

Oh, you mentioned the movie mode being worthless.. it isn't.. With my camcorder, I rarely record for more than a minute at a time, and even then, when I compile my videos, only about 10 percent of what I record make it into my final video! I like to keep about 3gb of memory for my s1/s2... that's about 24 minutes, or maybe 15-20 minutes with 500+ photos. I find it quite useful... I mix the video and slides to music, audio dubs, etc... people actually ASK to see out videos! Oh, and for the space it takes, I think you'll like the S2 better.
