Without a doubt, I would go for it.
I think the s2 is a lot more camera for you to grow into.
Kodak tends to simplify their interface, but if you're technical, more advanced, or plan to use it in such a way.. the Kodaks are frustrating.
The LCD on the Kodak may be Larger, but what's the resolution?
Plus, you'll learn to love the flip out LCD...
The 12x zoom and flip out LCD will result in most people choosing the S2 over a lot of cameras on the market, especially in that price range.
Essentially, if you never plan to grow in photography, want to be able to zoom, want to be able to take pictures from any angle, then no, don't switch. If you answer no to any of those, however, then you've pretty much answered your own question ;)
If you're really looking for a super zoom, then compare the S2 to the FZ5 and FZ20. I won't bother mentioning the Sony, just too much proprietary about that camera to even get me to look at it, let alone consider buying it.

the only thing proprietary about it is the memory card.

What would you pick - a prop Battery or a prop Memory Card

I would much rather have the proprietary memory card, especially sine they are only a few dollars more than the others.

If the fight is between (say) H1 and FZ20, this might just be the deciding factor.
I would be lucky if I get a prop battery at my nearest store unless the store also sells that camera/brand. Memory Strick is more prevalent.

Exactly. If I buy a camera with proprietary stick and AA' batteries, all I have to do is get a couple backup proprietary sticks for it and not worry. But when I have a proprietary battery, Im always worried about how much juice I have left, about charging it in the car, etc etc - it's just totally annoying and uneeded stress for someone who is going to be doing a lot of image and video taking in fairly remote national forests and parks.
I think it would be easier to find a memory stick for a Sony than it would most proprietary batteries,. And even then why would you need to buy another Sony memory stick if you had a few extra already?
