I wont link to a commercial site, but will link to a bargain-related site. Dell home has this camera for $354 after discounts.

If I could wait until mid-July for this camera I would hop all over this. However, I've already purchased the camera for $475 plus tax. *sigh*

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! :D

I think I was actually starting to go a little crazy - weighing the pros and cons of the S1 vs. S2 in my head... is the S2 really worth the extra $200? Probably, but it's reeeeally close. Too close for me to pull the trigger on either one. But NOW?? Now it's a no-brainer!! Honestly, I didn't believe this thread at first (no offense) - but naturally HAD to check it out... I was very pleased to discover that it's actually legit!! I ordered mine a few minutes ago!! Thanks again ucdcrush!!!

If you are 'on the fence' like I was on which megazoom to buy - this should remove all doubt. Do it - NOW. Before Dell figures out what's going on!! Seriously - they are losing a LOT of money on this deal, so I'm sure that it's a mistake and won't last much longer. $354 is just too good to pass up! Glad I ordered mine! :D

Well said. I ordered mine from Dell today as well. The 350$ pice instantly removed all doubt.

The Olympus c770 I wanted used very weak proprietary batteries, and the cost of 4-5 backups and a car charger really made the camera about 360-370$.

Now I dont have to worry AT ALL about charging batteries while in Yellowstone or Glacier National Park, i have 12x IS, zooming in video and widespread SD.

Im happy.

now if the camera will get here ;)

If you look here (http://dealram.com/prices/30/2GB.html) You can monitor the prices. Currently they seem to go for about $190 or so shipped, not including tax. 1GB seem the better buy still.

I saw 2gb Ultra II Sandisk at www.erwincomp.com for $172.95...
As with every place, the 2gb is on backorder, or hasn't been released???
Should be available any day. the 1gb version is $79.

BTW.. Montana.. In case you were wondering... I've been comparing the FZ5 and Canon S2 side by side.. and at LEAST with indoor flash photography, it's no contest. The S2 produces the better pictures with less noise. The FZ5 looks washed out.. and has a lot of noise. This was a disapointment, as it's so fast to focus, and so nice outdoors.. and handles sooo welll.. The Canon may take longer to focus, but I'll wait. It's a shame. I had landed a good deal on the FZ5, and had though of returning the s2, and keeping the s1. At this point, it's the FZ5 going back, and I'm selling the S1.

this is nice to hear! My original target was the FZ5, but I did not like how fragile it felt in my hands. Also, for some reason the viewfinder gave me huge problems. My eyes would go out of focus after viewing it. Wierd stuff. Also the proprietary battery was a big negative.

I had then decided on the Olympus C770 which takes great pictures, but uses a very weak proprietary battery. The cost of the camera itself is 280$, but when you add in backup batteries and a car charger it's more like 370$. Plus it's 4 megapixel.

It will be a huge relief to not have to worry about recharing batteries, etc while using the camera around vrious remote campgrounds around Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park.

estimated ship date is july 25. dell generally overestimates. in the meantime, i'll wait for reviews to see if this camera is any good. if not, i'll cancel and wait for the panasonic fz30 :D

I ordered right around 8 AM so I got a July 11th estimated ship date. I guess they are very conservative on their shipping estimates, with some people getting them a week after they order. We shall see.

I'm glad people are happy from this :) I agree it's a no brainer at this price. I am really struggling because I love this camera's features, but I wanted something I could put in my pocket (doesn't have to be a sub compact, just comfy to walk around with for a day in my pocket) and apparently, this isn't it :(

I am praying that Canon comes out with something that has full manual control, uses AA batteries and SD card (I have a 1 gig card I use in my Mp3 player), 4x-6x optical zoom with stabilizer that would help no-flash indoor shots, and a kick butt movie mode..even if you couldn't zoom during filming. that would probably be the perfect size for me, until then, I'll just admire the S2 pics I see.

It'll never happen... Canon has some smaller cameras with 3 and 4x zoom that would easily fit in your pocket. But they're not going to put IS on a 6x zoom camera, and to get the CCD size you want with your desired zoom range, it's just not going to happen, from an engineering perspective.

I think you're best option is to get a higher MP compact camera... like the SD500, it's got 3x zoom, takes 7mp shots, and when you crop them you'll end up with the 6x zoom you're looking for.

I wouldn't mind having one to carry around in my pocket, but I wouldn't want the compact camera to be my ONLY one.

There are always trade offs...

I ordered my S2 from the Dell site last night, my estimated ship date is July 25 :( but I can wait for a price like that. Now about that card. I'm reading it's an SD card, not a CF? Too bad, I've already got several CF cards laying around from the PowerShot G5 from my office. Are there any specific SD brands I should steer clear of? We need to start an S2 tips and tricks thread for all of us getting a new S2 in the coming weeks :D

The $70 coupon has already been used up (3000 uses) on the dell web page as of last night. Now today the S2 does not even show up at all on the dell site. They must have got too many orders.

did you guys check your "my account" on the actual Dell web page?

I bet you get your cameras soon. I ordered at around 8:30 CSt and I got my camera on the 14th!

I love this thing.

I could not find any mention of the S2 on the Dell site just after midnight on June 17th. Therefore, I would say that Dell has figured out that the low price was too, too low.

Um, Yes Montana. I have checked my account status at Dell pretty much every few hours since last Thursday. (What is that idiom about a watched pot never boiling....?) No change.

There's hope though. It hasn't been canceled....

Not that big a deal really. I have two cameras that both work just fine, I just hate waiting for things like this. If the continuous posting around here and other sites like this is any indication, many others hate waiting also.

Hi all,

New to forums, but long time reader. I was eyeing this camera back in April when Jeff pre-viewed it and lucked out by chancing upon bensbargains and seeing this Dell deal.

Ordered mine at 9 am on the 9th, and received it on the 14th. Seems like those that ordered it later in the day had about a 10 day difference in delivery/ship dates? I think my ship date was July 11th.

At any rate the hype is legit. This is a great camera! :)

The situation with Dell on the S2's is that they are on backorder. The ship dates are anticipated -- they could ship much sooner or later. Many who have a date in late July must be slated to receive the next shipment. The fact that some are seeing ship dates in September mean that Dell must have already sold more than they expect to get in their next shipment.

I think the sale was an error on their part, but they are honoring it since it wasn't a huge one. Hopefully in a month from now we'll all be praising Dell for the great deal on our S2s!
