Have you read Jeff's review (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/kodak/z740-review/)?

The Z740 sports an AF-assist lamp and its LCD "gains up" in low light, both good for low light performance. According to the review, low-light focusing is excellent. And there seems to be next to no redeye in the test shots.

The negatives from the review were that some of the night shots seemed a bit soft or "overprocessed", but you can probably just bump up the sharpening a notch. Noise and purple fringing were both cited as low.

IMHO, the main thing it lacks is image stabilization, when compared to other ultra-zooms like the Canon S1/S2 or the Panasonic FZ-series. IS can help reduce blur caused by camera shake especially at the telephoto end. If you'll be doing a lot of long zooming without a tripod, this might be an issue.

To be honest, Kodak seems to get a lot of flak from people on these camera sites, maybe because their cameras are easy to use and are thus perceived as not good enough for true camera buffs or something? I don't actually know why the Z740 isn't up there as a viable option for people considering the much more expensive Canons or Sonys or Panasonics. All my friends who have Kodaks have been very happy with them.

I appreciate your frank opinion. I had a Kodak DX4530 and the only thing that I didn't like about it was its poor low light performance. But then I started reading these reviews and found that "beauty lies in eyes of the reviewer". :D
