View Full Version : S2 IS Adapter/hood question...

So, I've done the research and have pre-ordered a S2 IS, the only other option was the H1, and from what i've seen the S2 appears to be doing pretty well in terms of pics i've seen etc and as I'm going overseas I need a cam which takes AA's, the features of this cam are pretty much perfect for my travels.

Anyway I'm a bit confused about 'adapter rings'.
Canon make the Adapter/Hood set (#LAHDC20), the adapter goes to a 58mm thread. Lensmate (lensmateonline.com) will be making a adapter that goes to 52mm.

My question is, can I just get the canon adapter and buy a 58mm Hoya uv filter(on ebay) instead of having to get the lensmate 52mm filter for a 52mm uv filter? Is the only advantage of lensmate's 52mm adapter that you can add on 3rd party conversions?

This is all due to the fact that I'm in Australia and ordering from the U.S is a pain in the ass (and shipping costs are over the top). Personally I'm not bothered if the adapter is black but the camera silver... I just want to have an adapter and UV filter for protection as this cam will be going overseas shortly.

Thanks.

Yes. I just got the LA-DC58E (conversion lens adapter as part of kit LAH-DC20) for the S2 and attached a Heliopan 58mm polarizer and UV filter and it works fine. I do not see any advantage of using the Lensmate 52mm adapter unless you already own a bunch of 52mm filters. Also you will not be able to use the Canon TC-DC58B or WC-DC58A conversion lenses (both excellent) without the LA-DC58E adapter. Also, I expect that there would be significant vignetting with a 52mm adapter/filter....

I m thinking of purchasing a Canon LAH-DC20 Lens Adapter and Hood Set for my new IS2 canon camera so that I can use some exiting lens that I already have from my older IS90 camera(a UV lens and a circular polarizing lens both 58mm).

Any comments or is this my best option?

PS I've checked most of the price comparison sites and the price doesn't fall much below canons price of $39.95 . Because we live in Hawaii I need to factor in the shipping. It can get a little pricey.
