I'm surprised, but in the end it isn't going to make much difference to me. My G4 tower is already obsolete!

what's great about this is, 1) the new apples will be insanely fast (G5's are already mad screaming fast) and 2) this should bring the overall cost of apples some 30-40%...making apples much more affordable.

i personally think the move makes apple a serious heavy-weight contender with other computer companies. (IBM, Dell, etc.)

He's 15 years too late...if he did this back in in 1990, Windows would be the one with less than 10% of the market...

Still, it isn't too late for Apple to carve out a bigger piece of the pie for the Mac. Dissatisfaction with Microsoft (the bugs, the security issues, the anti-piracy hassles, etc.) is at an all-time high.

Dissatisfaction with Microsoft (the bugs, the security issues, the anti-piracy hassles, etc.) is at an all-time high.It has the potential to be great news for consumers...although we'll have to wait and see how tight a grip Jobs wants to keep on the hardware, or whether he's willing to license the OS. If he decided to license the OS, he could actually kill off Windows. But I'll bet real money he doesn't do this. Even so, we will now have a very viable 3-way race between the Mac OS, Linux and Windows. Maybe Billy G will now be forced to deliver a better product...

If Apple licensed Mac OS, they'd stand a good chance of killing off Apple itself. Doesn't anyone remember the "clone wars" of the '90s? Apple's Phil Schiller has said publicly they would lock down Mac OS to Apple-branded hardware. They learned that lesson once, they don't need to learn it again.

But Schiller did say they wouldn't stand in the way of someone who wanted to run Windows on a Mac.

Given Apple's attitude about licensing, I don't see the move to Intel CPUs making a big dent in Windows' market share. All it does is give Apple access to the same industry-leading CPUs that their competitors get.

Mac OS...limited to Apple hardware...result: Apple only 1.8% market share after more than 20 years. 1.8%!!! If it weren't for their marketing dept., we wouldn't even know they exisited!

Want another example? Betamax versus VHS...the inferior technology won. The superior technology is a distant memory and an interesting footnote. The difference? VHS was licensed, Beta was not. History is replete with such stories.

I would love to purchase an Apple computer but, for the hardware, they are so overly priced I can't bring myself to think about it more than 5 minutes.

I hate to disappoint you, but Beta lives on. It's a professional videographer's format now.

I'm tempted by the mac mini but for the fact it's not expandable.

My computers are all full towers and I build them up as time goes by, adding extra drives and cards etc.

I hate to disappoint you, but Beta lives on. It's a professional videographer's format now.No dissapointment...it was the better mousetrap and I'm glad that it lives on in some regard...but I hate to dissappoint you as well...it's still a footnote.

As VHS will become when TIVO (and equiv.) and DVD Burners mature and come down in price. In our house, I haven't used tape in probably two years.

Mac O/S on a PC. Yes! I want to dump Windows. I already have Linux installed on some PCs already.

EricYou know if you look down the road a few years, it's easy to see that DVD technology...and HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, even though they're not even here yet, are already desitined for the dustbin of history...since we can already fit a DVD's worth of data on something the size of a postagestamp that has no moving parts...:D

But they're going to make us go through various steps to get there in order to extract the maximum amount of revenue for each new platform along the way...

It's just what they're doing with cameras. Kodak has a 16 megapixel full-frame sensor that works quite well so why are the other manufacturers palming us off with 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,11, 12, 13, 13, 15 megapixel sensors with an extra megapixel every year if it's not blatant Capitalism designed to inflate prices and milk more money from the hard pressed punter. "Ooh sorry - 14 megapixels is so last year and your terribly expensive camera is now worthless. Why don't you buy our 15 megapixel camera so we can milk you again with 16 megapixels next year?"

C'mon Rhys. You're just jealous you didn't think of it first. Something you'll have to get used to if you're going to live in the USA. Even our more "liberal" party members are pretty much motivated by blatant self interest, which is pretty much the definition of capitalism. We're not real big on government getting in our lives, and we've got nothing against hustling to make a buck. Technology improvement is simply a matter of doing the least necessary to remain competitive. I can live with that, because it keeps the market vital and creates more choices. Sometimes those choices are like vanilla or french vanilla, but that's better than only imitation vanilla. Nobody says you have to buy a new camera every time the technology changes just a little bit. I'd still be using my Coolpix 990 if it hadn't gotten broken (again). But, since it did break, I got a D70. It's quite likely that 10 years from now, barring failure, I'll still be using it.

As far as the hype, if it bothers you, don't listen. It's just a matter of having the self discipline to say no.
