I'm ready to buy...but see a lot of comments pop up about the softness of images in most every camera less than the pro models. Can you help with recommendations? My criteria:

Budget

* What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Please be as specific as possible.
>>>I'd like to max out at $2000, including a GOOD w/a lens and (maybe) a 1GB card

Size

* What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you?
>>>Don't care really. Prefer a substantial feel.

Features

How many megapixels will suffice for you?
>>>I'd like a minimum of 8mp

* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x, Other - Specify)
>>>Don't care

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)
>>>10+!

Do you care for manual controls?
>>>Yes, want to override when I need to. Hate to have the machine do all the thinking for me

General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for?
>>>Lots of landscapes, especially desert

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not?
>>>Yes

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos?
>>>Possible, would likie that flexibility

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?
>>>Seldom

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate?
>>>Already have a lot of Nikon 35mm SLR. Also have view caneras but the digital backs at $20,000+ are a bit over my budget :-0

Are there particular models you already have in mind?
>>>Canon 20D, but worried it's soft

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)
>>>Must have wide angle. Hot shoe would be good.
