I'm thinking of buying my first ever digital camera. And now I'm having a hard time choosing between A510 and SD200.

At first I was almost sure I'm gonna buy A510, but SD200 just looks SO tempting and I actually would buy it if I wasn't so concered about one thing. LCD. Is it really THAT fragile and isn't there ANY effective way to prevent it from cracking? I really would like to get this camera, but if it's going to crack in two days then what's the point in buying it?

While there have been a few reports online of people having problems with their Canon SDxxx series LCDs, it doesn't appear to be any greater problem than any other cameras out there. And many of us have SDxxx and been very hard on them without any problems.

So far, without any more data, I consider it a non-issue.

I can't say how well the screens will do in the long run, as I've had my SD200 only for about a month now, but I went through the same dilema of SD200 vs. A510...and if I were to do it again, I would chose the A510. I by no means think the SD200 isn't a good camera, but I got into photography a little more when I bought it(which I never thought would happen) and the A510 has the manual controls. What do you plan on using the camera for?

For "pocket-ability" and the better movie mode, I'd go with the SD200. The SD200 is ultra small and easy to carry around. I have a small padded case for it that protects the LCD quite well and it's still pretty small. It's definitely a well-rounded point-n-shoot cam, if you don't require the extra manual controls. It's still pretty fun to play with. I had taken a few 15 seconds night time exposures.

Hmm, I've never heard of this "issue" with the LCD screen cracking. I bought an SD200 for a family member more than 6 months ago and the things still looks and works as if it were brand new. No problems at all. It is very small, takes nice pictures, and has a great LCD. However, it does not have the manual controls but you don't sound like you would use them anyway :) . Just make sure you get a good case for it. The only way I could imagine the LCD breaking is by dropping it or somehting.

i was worried about it too mate but i dont let anyone touch my camera and i put on latex gloves every time i use it. I also keep it in 3 cases. the original soft white sleeve, then i put it in a just fitted camera case and then a larger camera case.
