View Full Version : Help! New Powershot S60 with black dot on LCD screen
Hi! I just bought my very first digital camera--Canon Powershot S60. I've had it about a week, and I've just noticed that my LCD screen shows a black dot in the center-right side of the screen. When I have the camera at the widest setting, the dot is the largest (about 6 mm) but also the faintest. When I have it set at the closest setting the dot is smaller (about 3 mm) and darker. It shows on the picture when I play it back on the camera. I'm not sure if it shows if I print it out (I've yet to print my first pic) but it does show up when I display the picture on my computer. When I look through the viewfinder, I don't see the dot. I haven't done anything nasty to the camera (drop it, expose it to moisture, heat, etc...). So, any ideas why the camera is doing this? Who do I call about this? Canon? Or do I ask B&H Photo to exchange it? These things always seem to happen to me! :( Any help would be greatly appreciated!! :)

If the dot shows in the actual pictures, when viewed on the computer there is a missing pixel on the sensor. Be sure to transfer the pics to the computer and view them on the computer, not directly off the memory card. If it only shows on the LCD screen and not on the pics when viewed on the computer, then it's just a missing pixel in the LCD and as it doesn't affect the pics, is considered acceptable by Canon. You should return the camera and get a good one if it shows on all the pics.
As long as it doesn't show on the pics themselves (look at them on a computer or printed copy), then it's just a dead pixel in the LCD. In either case, return to where you bought it for an exchange.
Thanks for your advice. I printed out a picture, and the spot showed up on the print also. I called Canon and they suggested trying to exchange it from where I bought it before sending it to them for repair. I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed with how the Customer Service Rep at B&H Photo handled my call. The problem with my camera occurred on the 7th day after I received it (right on their return/exchange deadline). Unfortunately, I was on vacation 250 miles from home and hadn't thought to bring B&H's phone number with me in the event of a problem. So, I returned home yesterday and called them today. The Rep. did not want to accept my request for an exchange. It was only after I repeatedly argued with him about my circumstances (and offered to show him my hotel receipt to prove I was out of town) and asked to speak to a supervisor that he put me on hold for 20 seconds and then came back and said I could exchange the camera. Why go through all of that? I guess the "service" has gone out of Customer Service. Oh well, at least they are going to exchange the camera. Hopefully the next one will be problem free (and I won't be going anywhere within the first 7 days!).
