View Full Version : Which cameras can zoom during video??

There has been much conjecture, speculation, and some disappointment in the recent comparisons between the new Sony H1 and the new Canon S2 IS on this forum. Much of the speculation concerned whether or not the H1 would allow use of the zoom function while in video mode. Nearly everyone (myself included) was hoping that it would - and there was even a SONY REP THAT REPORTED that it would! However, sadly, that's not the case. Jeff's review is up and he definitely cleared that up for us (thanks Jeff) - the H1 CANNOT ZOOM IN VIDEO MODE. Period.
My question is, where does that leave the field of cameras that CAN zoom in video mode? For those of us searching for the ultimate [digicam/camcorder] covergence device, this would be a great list to have. But, I cannot find a definitive list anywhere of cameras that have this feature. Here's the ones that I know about right now:
- Canon S2 IS
- Canon S1 IS
- K-M Z2
- K-M Z5
- K-M Z3
- Casio Exilim Pro EX-P505
- Olympus C770 (with the use of an external mic)
What am I missing??
Thanks in advance!
the Canon SD400 can (well the Ixus 50 can).

the Canon SD400 can (well the Ixus 50 can).As I understand it, the Canon SD400 is the U.S. version of the Ixus 50. It definitely CANNOT zoom while in video mode, and I can't imagine that the non-U.S. version is THAT much different. I think you might be mistaken on this one.
For clarification, I'm talking about ZOOMING WHILE SHOOTING VIDEO - not zooming and then shooting video (with the zoom feature locked).
The Canon S2 gives you opitical zooming while shooting videos...the quality is amazing...
It's as close to a "hybrid" as you will find in today's market...
It takes great still pictures as well...

The Canon S2 gives you opitical zooming while shooting videos...Yes - thanks JTL. To be completely clear, I'm looking for cameras that allow the user to OPTICALLY ZOOM WHILE SHOOTING VIDEO. All the cameras on the [very short] list above can do that. Am I missing any?? There must be one or two that I don't know about! :o

So that's it then? Only seven cameras?? How disappointing... I was hoping that I was missing some from my original list.

You know I'm going to say go with the S2...so I don't have to say it...:D
I love my S2...I know it's wrong to leave my SD500 for another camera so soon, but my G6 has also been temporarily banished...they can keep each other company for a week or two while my torrid S2 affair plays itself out...:D

If my list is indeed complete (and I'm assuming that it is), then I am 'officially' narrowing my options down to the S1 and the S2. Now they must fight to the death!! There can be only one!!

The Sanyo Xacti C5 also allows you to use its optical zoom (5x) while shooting video. :)
