Hi all,

One of my hobbies is model railroading and I am now using my Canon 350D to photograph layouts. This photo was taken on my home layout using Daylight Fluorescent Tubes.

Hope you like it. :)

Wow! If you hadn't told me it was a model I'd be hard pressed to figure it out on my own...

Wow! I agree Jamie. If the perspective was lower it would be even more believable. Nice hobby and welcome to the dslr club. ;)

My hobby used to be model railways, many, many moons ago. I have since taken some digital photos of my old railway waggons etc. The dust tends to look disproportional but they have a kind of realistic and gritty feel at high ISO.

What gauge is that model railway? The background looks very detailed. It surely can't be Z, N, OO or HO gauges. Is it O or 1 gauge?

Well thanks indeed for that, the lens was 18-55 which came with the 350D-- For those interested the model in question is 0n30 Narrow gauge. I have had many publication in Model magazines over the years, the latest was February 2005 in Model Railroading magazine. I do have a website with many photo on it which were taken with my other camera "Fuji Finepix S7000" before I got the Canon. I have placed my website below for all those model railroad inclined members to look at.
Thanks once again :)

WOW this is just amazing. The detail of the plants and ground clutter are just incredible.

I am having a hard time with the scale could you post a shot with a common item in the frame to help us judge the scale... something like a coin or soda can really anything the we can all relate to. Thanks.

On30? I'm not familiar with that. Is it a custom gauge?

Wow - I esp. loved the nighttime photos. The guys working in the sawmill. Just great. It looks like you've invested years into your collection. Great job.

Many thanks once again, Eagle17 asked for a size relation, so here's a photo of a loco with my glasses stood on end. :D

I was a professional photographer for many years back in the 1960' - 1970s using a Mamiya C330 and Roliflex 3.5f with a planar lens. Now at the age of (Sshhh retired for the last 10 years) Model Railroads and my Grandchildren are all the photography left open.

Thanks for the size comparison. Is the track gauge actually OO/HO with the rolling stock being home-built?

Hi Rhys, Yes the track is H0 size, but the ties (Sleepers UK) are wider apart.

Here's another shot taken with a 3 second exposure.

That is impressive. Maybe adding a background so it's not blown out from over exposure, just enough for framing your image.

Interesting. The track is custom made then? I have seen people making track by hand. I wish I'd been able to take pictures of it. That was all 30 years ago though at Bridgend leisure centre in South Wales.

"The Fat Controller was still trying to figure out how to move the giant pair of glasses carelessly left by the side of the track!"

:D

Brilliant Photo's...I'd have never known it was a model. And the 'blown out' sky just goes to make it look all the more authentic.

Many thanks for all your comments, well received indeed.

Here's a shot I took the other day. Little Tom Thumb coming through the forest.
