I want to upgrade my Minolta S414 and have looked at the Rebel and a few others but very interested in the Pro1 or the new S2. My pics are family, outdoors, vacations, etc. and I take a lot but nothing real technical and don't want to overwhelm my ability and wonder if the Rebel might do that for me besides the cost. I like the 7x optical of the Pro1 and the 12X of the S2. My main demand is a good shutter speed my Minolta is terrible! Will the Pro1 or S2 allow for rapid snapshots with little shutter lag? Also, would it be a good overall camera for someone like my self with a lot of photography interest but little knowledge? Thanks for any input.

The Pro 1 has 7x optical zoom but no image stabilization. If you're in a hurry, get the S2 IS (Faster processor but slower shutter speed than the Pro 1). The S2 IS's movie mode is way better and so is continuous shooting. The S2 IS also has Canon's My Colors featuring color swap, accent, etc.
If you're not in a hurry, maybe you should wait for the Pro 2. Canon is bound to make a much better Pro 2 with Samsung's Pro 815 (15x optical, 3.5" LCD  ) ..... or not. The chance of Canon making a much better Pro is 50-50.
Canon might want to compete with Samsung and possibly other brands.... But the production cost may be overwhelming and the Pro 2 may compete with 2 of their d-SLRs (Rebel XT, 20D)
Look out for other brands as well like Sony. Sony doesn't have any dSLRs or in fact, any reason, not to make a 8 MP, 15x optical, 3.5" LCD F939.
