 Feedback on proposed kit please!

I am looking to buy the 350D. Currently have a film SLR, a Canon Ixus 3 digital and can't hack being dual format! I have a Sigma 28-300 zoom, and a Canon EF 22-55mm 4-5.6 to carry over.

My needs are - wide angle and high ISO for interiors as I am an interior designer, as well as landscapes, decent portrait facilities (ie fast lens) for events and family (will be getting married this year and want my dad to use my camera for wedding pics) and a practical zoom facility for out and about. I don't want masses of heavy kit to carry around.

I was thinking the following (no kits lens):

Wide angle lens - but can't decide between:
Tamron AF 11-18 f4.5-5.6 DI II LD (£399)
Canon EOS 10-22 EF-S 3.5-4.5 (£549 - £70 cashback)
or Sigma 10-20 f4 EX DC HSM (£339.99) - I know not out yet but can anyone feedback about the EX series lenses - are they better than the bog standard?

General single use lens
Tamron AF 28-75mm f2.8 (=45-120 @ 35mm)

And keep my Sigma 28-300 for long zoom situations (wildlife, surfing shots etc). I figured that the Tamron lens hasn't got a massive zoom, but with a 8MP sensor I can crop quite tight anyway if need arises. Not likely to be doing big prints as I really like the option of editing and burning onto DVD and viewing albums that way, as I can't keep up doing prints and albums - its way too slow.

Disregarded the Sigma 18-125 as didn't think it would gain me much considering the fast lens and wide angle requirements.

Thought that with the f2.8 lens, I won't need a fast 50mm prime (should this be a 30mm for the DSLR anyway?) for portraits, that is the weakness with the slower 28-300. And would be better for the wedding.

Read all the stuff about the Tamron 28-75 - bit worried about the 28mm focussing but figured with a wide angle as well probably wouldn't use that end much anyway, and guess will have to get from a retailer, not on the web to ensure I don't get a dud that I can't return!

Really pushing my £1000 budget with the two lenses - to about £1200, so would appreciate any feedback to this setup from those more in the know please, before I splash my dosh!

Thanks,

Vicki

I think this is a great looking kit.

I carry a 20D, Sigma 12-24mm ex dg, and tamron 28-75mm in a small tamrac back pack just about anywhere I go.

I do not have any experiance with the three lenses you list on the wide end (except for a few hours with the canon 10-22 but not enough variation in shooting to be able to tell you how good of a lens it is) so I will refrain from commenting on wich of those to buy other than to say that this kit will be a very good range and you should be very happy with it.

The tamron and Dreb XT are a great combo (I have both) and if you decide to get a prime i would recommend the 50 1.4 or if you really want to save some cash even the 50 1.8 mark II will work just fine for portraits. I would not recommend a 30mm or 35mm for portraits unless you are taking large group protraits and then you wouldn't want the fast speed anyway because it would be too hard to get everyone in focus anyway with a really shallow DOF.

let us know how you like the kit once you buy it..

Thanks John - will refine the thread about the wide angles and see if anyone can let me know a bit more.

Hoping to get all the kit for my birthday 10 June - so will get a move on now!

Cheers!
