Size question for Smugmug/Pbase or other Service User

Im thinking of using one of these services to host my growing photo albums, especially now that I have a shiny new Canon SD500. My old camera was 2.1 megapixels, the new one is 7.1 megapixels. What I am wondering is what size people usually upload their pics at. I dont care about ordering prints from those sites--I do that from Shutterfly which I get excellent prints from, but they arent really built for publishing nested albums. What I do want to use these sites for is to organize my images into albums with tags, to have friends and family view them (all of whom DO have broadband), and also, to be able to view them large to see detail clearly if someone (including myself) desires. So I was wondering, can people here who have their images hosted by a site discuss what size they post at and why they chose that size? Thanks MUCH!

I use smug mug and because their 30 dollar annual fee allows me to have unlimited storage I have been uploading my new pictures without resizing or reducing quality to get smaller files. The only thing you run into is that it takes me an hour per 25-30 pictures to upload to smugmug @ 3MB a piece coming out of the XT. So if you don't have a lot of time on your hands, which in some cases I won't, I would use a Photo editor like PSE3.0 to save the pictures for web, which you can reduce the quality and size for web posting... Which when I post on here I reduce the pictures to something like 400 x 2XX and reduce the quality to something like 70-80% which ever gets me below the size restriction.

Thanks MUCH!I use a 4MP FZ15, and I just upload the whole image. Smugmug lets me select various sizes for displaying, so there's never any hassle with trying to downsize a photo to fit a particular site. If I were concerned about copyrights (maybe I should be, but no), I might be concerned about making full-sized images available on-line. If that were the case, I'd probably downsize to 800X600 for uploads, except the special case of panoramas. For web viewing, never printing (I do print occasionally from Smugmug), there shouldn't be much reason to upload more than 800X600.

Are you saying there is a size restriction? I thought space was unlimited with them.

Do you know offhand what the pixel dimensions of a 4mp image is? I worry that uploading my 7.1 images right from the new camera might be a bit much, space wise or something.

No, I meant the PIXEL dimensions, in case I want to resize to the same size you use.


(MB size of the 7.1 jpgs from my camera are around 2.5 to 3mb depending on the file as is from the camera.)

I use smugmug as a gallery for pictures that I like and as a posting spot for people interested in prints (although I usually print to order on my Epsons). So I post full size from the D70. It doesn't really take that long, and I only upload a few prints at a time.

Yes. But the JPEG fine upload file size is 2.5MB to 3.5MB. Again the idea is to post small batches and use the site as a gallery, and an off-site backup of some of my favorites as well.

My 8 MP demensions are 3456x2304. There is no restriction on the amount of storage on smugmug. The only restriction I believe is on Bandwidth... The amount of traffic your page generates is limited... You can purchase more if you need it.

If don't purpose to get prints, i'd suggest you to resize your pics to 800x600 (or about) givin' you some size around 120k/200k, easy and fast to upload and to look at when browsing your gallery.
Don't forget to sharpen a bit the resized pic as you loose some focus when downsizing.

Bandwidth isn't a problem. The index photos are small. I bar access to the larger images - if people want bigger then they pay :D
