I discovered the same problem with my camera within 80 shots of opening the box. When I zoom to about 80%, the camera displays the lens error and shuts down. Since it is still within 30-days of purchase, I will be sending my camera back to J&R Computer for a replacement (good price, good customer service).
Could your camera have been accidentally turned on while in your pocket or in a case? Many people have reported the lens error occurs when the lens is blocked as it extends during power-up. It is possible this could cause permanent damage to the lens.
To help eliminate the accidental power-ons, you can disable the power-on when the REC/PLAY buttons are pressed (Press MENU, select SET UP tab, select REC/PLAY). Another problem is the main power button is not recessed, so it can be easily bumped in a case or pocket. I plan on purchasing a hard case to help avoid the problem. I may also try to "fashion" something for my replacement camera.
There are ongoing discussions on dpreview about this issue:
Hope this helps!
