Coolpix 5900 Vs Canon sd400

After a not-so-good decision to buy Sony P100, I am scouting the market to get a new camera(certainly not Sony this time). After some research I have finally landed on two.- The Coolpix 5900 and the Canon sd400.

Both seemed pretty good cameras with comparable features with sd400 being the 'cooler' looking one. Price difference of abt 70$(sd400 costlier)

Now the question is which one to buy. From what I have read on the net, I gather that Canons have this E18 error which they somehow get after 1 year and then Canon asks for 150$ to fix it up. I also read that the canons sd***/s*** have a very fragile lcd which breaks for apparently no reason.

Steve still does not have the review for 5900, so I need some input from you guys.

Which one is the better one?(if the lcd & E18 story is true then I would say 5900 is the better one).

okay i had the same problem as you! (i was considering different cameras than you though), I broke the LCD on my S400, so when i heard the SD400 was even more prone to a broken screen i decided to stay clear, as im not the most careful person. Then again many careful people reported their camera to break after hardly any use.

Well i came across this:

Supposedly these greatly reduce the chance of the LCD cracking
They are supposedly placed between, so as to minimise damage.

Tian. thanks for this link. These would protect the LCD, however there is one outstanding concern that I have. the 'E18' error. This seems like a nemesis for the canon cameras.

While I'm not ready to dismiss the possiblity of issues with the E18 error or the LCD screen on Canons, I've also seen no hard evidence that Canons have any greater rate of failure than any other cameras out there. The plural of anecdote is not data, all we have so far are complaints on message boards. Again, not to dismiss this, but I'd much rather see comparison data and actual camera repairs.

I've had my SD300 for 6 months and have been very rough with it, and have had no problems. Certainly, this isn't a guarentee of future success, but it's also a data point. Other friends have Canon P&S cameras and also abuse them like I do (we're hikers, skiers, and climbers) and no one has seen either the E18 or LCD problems. More anecdotal evidence.

I had posted the thread regarding "Should I keep my Nikon 5900". These are the two cameras that I am still deciding between. I'll be interested to hear more input and what you decide. I have to decide by Friday before I leave for a trip.

You made me very curious! Why was the Sony that bad for you?

Well....most of the pictures that I took with P100 were blurry. I had a p70 before that and even that was so much better than the P100. P100 produced dissapointing picture quality. > 80% of my pictures turned out blurry. I would prefer P70 over P100 anyday. It was the worst experience.

I had the P73 for some time and I was very happy happy with it. At that time I owned a Nikon Coolpix and the P73 was borrowed from a friend. I have to say that I felt really sorry that I had to return it and stay with my Nikon...
