OMG!!!!!!
This is my first post.

what AWESOME pictures.
makes me want to throw my camera away and forget about it.

Just got a new camera Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H10.
I'm sure there's better (and worse) but this is what I ended up with.

I'm still learning all the functions and am pleased with the results so far (considering).

Previous cameras:
Canon AE-1
Argus C3
Casio Exilim Ex-S2

You guys are sure giving me inspiriation to get back into (amature) photography.

.......please forgive spelling errors.

Agreed, beautiful setting. The environment and lighting give it a nice "feel". Great capture!

Lifeguard tower on Ft Lauderdale beach. Lifeguard flags: Red means high hazard (VERY strong current in the water) and the purple means marine life warning (there was apparently some bacteria in the water). The weather was so nice though, that neither of those things stopped people from enjoying the beach!

Gintares, very nice shots. I really like the third shot. The light is just fantastic in that one. Well captured.
Turo, nice shot of the beach. Beautiful colours.

Here's a shot I took during my vacation. It is near San Vincente de la Barbequerra (or whatever way you write it) in Spain:

Lukas--#2 is hella cool. It looks very dreamy and old-fashioned.

Lukas, I really like those three. For #3, I find the building and the parking lot in the foreground just a bit distracting. But IMO, #2 is absolutely perfect! GREAT capture!

Lake Aloha.

The landscape here is unreal, even a picture doesn't really do it justice (I have been thinking of a fisheye....) I'd like to go back and catch a moonrise and sunrise from the same location more or less.

The black and white hardly effects it, since the clouds and rocks are most of the picture and are pretty grey, and the distant trees don't exactly add a lot of color. I can't tell which ones are B&W as I scroll through.

More pictures to follow as I get the desire and time.

Shot this at 2 seconds, ISO-100, F/22 for depth of field. I ended up with my circular polarizer on there too, but also used my 1000x neutral density filter to darkening things up.

This is very interesting to see a different landscape - what camera are you using? and do you have software to resize easily - your photos are a little larger than best for viewing here - if you can make them a little smaller that would help uus to see them better

I love the perspective, but I think a bit more interest in the sky would work even better. Maybe a sunset or sunrise, or more cloud detail would really make this photo stand out. Just a thought, but still a cool pic!:)

No overhang, I was nice and dry, I just zoomed in on the bottom of

most challenging because you are always focusing on not getting your
gear wet and miss alot of photos that way.

But I have been in many rain down pours and they are the most challenging because you are always focusing on not getting your gear wet and miss alot of photos that way.

My problem is that I can't keep the front element of the lens (or filters) dry. Then all my pictures end up spotty. Even when it's not raining I have trouble. Yesterday I was at the beach and so much saltwater/mist was collecting on the front of my lens that it was getting difficult to keep anything clean. I have a hood but it's a short wide angle one, and I can't use it anyway if I'm using GND filters.

I do live on Whidbey Island, Washington, on Puget Sound, not the true coast, but a big body of water that was formed during the ice age. All the ships have to enter the sound by the Straight of Jaun De Fuca, to get to the sea ports of Olympia, Tacoma, Everett, and Seattle, so I get to watch all that traffic too.
Seattle, about 70 miles to the south of me, on the mainland, has the most mildest weather of any big city this far north, in the continental United States.

I was going to say Vancouver Island as that's where I'm from and it definitely looks like my part of home, but Whidbey Island is close enough. In fact, correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you see the lights of Victoria from some parts of Whidbey? Oh ya, beautiful shots!

I actually think you underexposed a lot of them. Either put it in full manual or use exposure compensation. The composition could use some work too. For example, the one of the railing on the left needs to be shifted right or left. If you want the railing in there that's fine, but move it 1/3 of the way into the frame so it looks like it belongs there. I think you need to work to compose so that you isolate your subject. This will help you to avoid the cluttered look. This can be hard to do in the woods. Also, shooting from a high or low angle can make a shot more interesting than something from eye level. I'm not sure why you posted the same berry picture 4 times.

Very peacefull shot indeed! I can see how it could be the ideal spot...

As for my Seascape? I used a small amount of sharpening -but it was a reasonably quick shutter at 800th sec and F7.1 ISO50 @ 35mm equiv 200mm (135 if it were my Nikon). I cropped it a little and fine tweaked the colour and saturation - then applied a small amount of sharpening.
The KM A-200 is generally soft and low on contrast and saturation and so needs a little more usually than my Nikon.

Very interesting photos - not sure how you got them all on here - I didn't check - probably from another site
Anyway
Just one helpfull tip - can you try to limit the image size to no wider than 999 and no higher than 580 - otherwise they extend beyond the frame and are harder to appreciate - also it changes the layout so frantic scrolling left and right is required as well.
These are great shots and I would be able to enjoy them more if they were stacked rather than side by side ( which effectively makes it all wider again)
Just trying to make appreciating your images easier:)

Brian, the meditation park is beautiful.
SpecialK, your Taft Point, Yosemite Park, shot was breath-taking.
JPW', the Lake District shots look great. I actually like the first "underexposed" shot as it evokes the dark, moody light of an overcast day really well.
Eddie, I loved the whole landscape series from Whidbey Island, and the "Shots from the cove" series, particularly the blue schooner, that imo is a great shot! :D

Mother Nature, you fickle lady, second day of fall....
Why do you teases me,
with your beauty,
puffy clouds,
gentle breezes,
and soft warming rays....
Before you chill me,
wrap me in cold,
with your kisses of frost at night?

http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm288/eddy-haskell/tease-1.jpg

Your apples, sweet apples,
juicy and crisp,
quenching both hunger and thirst,
a hint of the salt air,
in their sweetness,
As you finish their growing.
Just days to their harvest, and your sharing,
along the oceans shore....

http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm288/eddy-haskell/tease-2.jpg

Ah me Lady, wonderful dame,
you bid me farewell,
with the richness of your golden glow,
reflecting,
in a million sparkling nuggets,
as a bridge from your heavenly perch,
to the dampness of the sand....
inviting me into join you again,
tomorrow,
a promise you'll always honor.

Early morning landscape

Had to run up island this morning to the shop. I knew it would be a good opportunity to get a shot of this pier that juts out into this cove, with the sun coming up over the mountains.....
I passed up more terrestrial shots, as the lighting effects gave the heavens a glow you have to see to believe....
But I wanted to try to capture the pier and mountains.

Hope you enjoy the set. These are not photo shopped, and I even got the horizon straight...I think

Five minutes to sunrise:

Just peaking over the Cascade Mountains:

http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm288/eddy-haskell/sunrise-1.jpg

And up and on her way...... :)

http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm288/eddy-haskell/sunrise-2.jpg

And after taking the above, I turned my back on the sunrise, as it was causing too much lens flair. With these shots you can see the effect of the early morning light casting its glow across the other side of the cove....

I really like it, but I see what you mean. I can only think of three ways, none is that great:

1) Use a telephoto lens to keep the framing branches while zooming in on the bridge, but at the cost of little if any sky visible
2) Walk closer to keep the sky, but lose the framing branches
3) With a wide aperture, focus intensely on the bridge with all else out of focus so people look at the bridge first.

Thanks for the suggestions, Raven. Do you think this one works better?

raven15

 I have no idea. I almost like the first one better because I am more prone to nature shots. But, the composition of the second one seems better (larger bridge, I like how the swoop of the bridge reacts with the swoop of the wall behind it, plus the wall has great texture). But, The asphalt path sorta detracts from the scene. Otherwise, I guess I like the second one.

toriaj
10-02-2008, 09:08 PM
Thanks, Raven. Yep, I wish it was a cobblestone path too ... but alas I don't think we have those in the West

There was a nice set of stairs though, I'd love to take some portraits here. This was one of my "best" cases of aperture/focus point use. I focused on the second-to-bottom stair at f/7.1. I got everything in good focus other than the mountain in the background, which isn't a detailed part of the composition anyway. Maybe I'm finally figuring this stuff out!! :D

18 mm, 1/125 sec., f/7.1, ISO 200

edit: errgh it's so soft on the forum! The resized, sharpened shot looks fine on my compy. But so soft here. I've noticed this with lots of my shots lately, strangely I notice it more in some threads than in others. For example, my recent posts in the Buildings and Nikon DLSR threads are fine. Anyone else notice the softness when uploading images directly to DCRP?

Not bad. In the first one I don't like how the grass in the foreground blocks some of the fence. I'd probably walk down the path a little farther where the grass is shorter. This would also make the fence bigger and allow you to use it as a leading line across the image. The exposure needs a little bump as well. A nice effort. I don't know if you can get inside that fence or not but if you could I think you'd have more creative options. I don't really like the last one. The B&W versions need more contrast.

Edit: I edited that last one. Let me know if you want to see it.

Yes, you are right. It's a problem that has happened to me before, my monitor is calibrated for consumer colors, super contrasty and saturated (oh... look at the pretty monitor!). So, I tune my picture to what looks good, then other people think the low contrast makes it look flat, and with dull colors. Looking at it at work now, it is much less interesting.

I tried walking down the road, but I still like the grass one better because it adds much-needed texture to the foreground.

By the way, I really appreciate critiques of my work. Many people don't do anything besides occasionally say "that looks good", which is not so useful. That's why I try to do it for other people. So anytime you have something to say about my shots, go for it!.

And now for a few black and whites. Quite a few actually, sorry, I couldn't decide which of these I liked better. If you can, please let me know!

All taken within 16 hours last weekend within a ten mile radius. All in Lamoille Canyon in the Ruby Mountains, Nevada, or near the mouth of the canyon. Oly E-410 and 14-54mm lens, RAW.

Work performed in photoshop (because I don't yet have an ND filter) and Irfanview. I added borders to give back some of the atmosphere taken away by resizing for the interweb. I have been practicing black and white for a photography class, it is fun, I should have tried sooner!

If you have any tips in particular or general please let me know, I want to improve my landscapes, and I will also be turning some or all of these in. Notice that many are of the same thing, with different foregrounds and zooms.

As I said on flickr, I love #3. Although I want to see it larger. #4 has potential but I think I'd like it more if there was more water and if the footprints didn't go off the right edge. Maybe shifting position to the left?

Thanks a lot Tori. I think those are my footprints. I wandered up the beach to see if there was a better spot. I ended up choosing this spot because there was a little slope and it wasn't getting covered by the waves.

Love 3 Lukas.

Re 4 perfectly executed (& much better than my attempts) but I wish the scene blessed you with a stronger background element like a solo tree in silloutte. Then I recon you could have sold it.

I wish the moon had been a little lower on the horizon, as it would have given me some more interesting compositional options, but it was what it was. :)

Prospero, I like the 3rd one best. You certainly have mastered the HDR technique. Were all these taken with a tripod? I have taken a lot of source images intending to use with Photomatix or a few other HDRI programs, but I have often struggled to get a better end product than the best exposed single image. I think my biggest limitation has been when using the autobracket burst on the Olympus E510. It is limited to +/- 1 EV and that is just not enough for some images. I only use this for non-tripod shots when I need the burst to keep movement to a minimum. I guess it is back to the tripod...

Thanks. I'm glad you like the image.
I took all these with a tripod. Using a steady tripod will give you the best results for HDR, but is is certainly possible to shoot HDRs without one - most of the HDRs I've shot before were not taken with a tripod.

A bracketing burst of +/- 1 EV is indeed quite limiting. Mostly, if the scene can be covered in such a small range, I don't bother with using HDR. In this case you can often get a better result using shadow and highlight recovery tools of a RAW converter.

So, with your camera it is best to change the shutterspeed manually between the shots. However, this is quite hard, because the time between each shot is much longer so the effects of wind will show up much quicker in the result.

I love those blue tones Lukas they are lovely landscapes. Did you change the colours at all in PP or is that how it looked? The first one's good too but the others in the series being colour seem to overshadow it. Actually it would probably look good in golden or sepia tones instead of B&W, what did the original colour shot look like?

Ok - so maybe I should post one as I don't post here very often..
On my recent trip to Eagle heights on a grey misty wet day - I looked

be beaten by the weather - make the most of it'
So this is it - manual WB of 5300K and set the camera to Vivid, which I
never normally do..

Hey guys,

Thanks so much for your positive comments. It's really encouraging. Especially after looking at your albums.

Anyway, as for where the photos were taken.

1st: This was taken near San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. It's a tour you can to do some high altitude lagoons (about 4200 meters). These lagoons are perfect for taking pictures as it's hard to take a bad shot at them.

2nd: This is called Lago Huechulaufquen (sp?) in Argentina. Again, this was taken on a tour to a volcano called Volcan Lanin, it's the snow caped main peak to the right. Beautiful place and perfect time of year.

3rd: This is at a place called Los Saltos De Petrohue, north of Puerto Montt in Chile. A beautiful cascades in front of Volcan Osorno in Southern Chile.

4th: This is from a peak called Poon Hill in Nepal. If you ever get a chance, go there. This was part of a larger trek, but the view from here was incredible of the Himalayas. From this hill you can see some beautiful peaks like Dhaulagiri (10th highest), Annapurna, and Macchapucchre (fish tail peak).

Well, again, thanks guys for all your positive comments. I look forward to posting some more of what I've done here eventually. I also look forward to reading these forums more and learning more stills and abilities from all of you.

Love those misty trees K1W1. Only thing that spoils it for me is the increasing lean to the left as the eye travels to the left of the shot. I presume that is just how the trees were but it just makes it look a bit odd to me. I wondered if it would look cool if you actually tried to accentuate it but symetrically in PP. Sort of try to make the trees fan out from the bottom as if it was a very low level wide angle shot - just an odd thought.

That first one is very cool K1W1. The dark burned tree (??) in the foreground is somewhat distracting though.

I dunno, I like it in spite of both those reasons. Wish I had some mist to play around with, I don't think I've seen shred in the 10 months I've had my camera.

Eddie, at least you are stuck in a scenic location.

Thanks for the comments about the trees.
For a little background the area is about 600m from where I live and this is statistically the most bush fire prone area in the world. The effect I was trying to get was what things look like after a fire with the burnt out trees and the grey misty smoke (it is actually mist in the photo). FWIW if you look at the ground you will see evidence that the whole area was burnt out in February this year in a controlled burn to reduce fuel for the fire season we are now in.

The contrast is the stream shot in a rain forest area maybe 2 km away in a straight line. It shows the difference that south facing (stream) vs north facing (trees) makes to the environment.

What country are you from if I may ask? You have some nice locations, those two pictures are great! I prefer the last shot, however there's just a little bit blown out in the center of the leafs..

Testing my new lens at 85mm wide open.
Loads of excellent shots here!!

DPR - I am really interested to see/har what you think of the Nikon 16-85 - I am considering one in place of my Sigma 17 - 70 - though I am not sure how much I would gain or loose...

cheers

Everyone's asking the same question (usually in PM).

I don't feel I'm good enough to comment on a lens and sway someone's purchasing decision. I like it heaps more than my old 18-200VR though. The 16-85 is sharp to my eyes even pretty wide open. Whereas the 18-200 always looked a little blurry below F7.1

The 16-85 is almost always limitted to a min apperture of F/5 ish though as I mostly shoot above 40mm at my kids.

I can say that a photog I really respect said my SOOC 16mm F3.5 landscape test shots had kept great sharpness to the edge of the frame.

It's pretty expensive new and there are few if any second hand ones.

16mm is nice, 85 is far enough for me and I like my images throughout the range.

Here's the link Rooz gave me to help me choose lenses.

My alternative was to buy a 24-70 F/2.8 and a Tokina wide angle so this was a much cheaper route for me and gives great IQ (at least to my poorly trained eyes) but stays slow.

Thanks for all that DPR - I will keep a look out for your posts with that lens - I have also downloaded some photos from another test site.
I have plenty of time to decide - it's that or the Macro lens first, and I have a 17 - 70 at the moment but I am doing some re-structure thinking with my kit just now.

Point Nepean and the entrance to Port Phillip Bay.
This is a former Military base and the building was a barracks building.

Nice shot K1W1, could easily be a location from Far Cry :).
And lexstar, I really love that first one, good job!

Those are really beautiful Mike.
So's the one in the reflection thread too.

agree with Phill, these are some very good shots, i love the last one in particular, it as both landscape and candid photo elements, lovely

Here's a similar water eroded landscape. In this case layers of sand and mud layed down during retreating ice ages and intermittently being covered with ocean then eroded back with rainfall.

I previously posted in the Nikon POTD thread where it was correctly pointed out I've overdone the sky. Learning experience.

a bit overdone BUT STUNNING BEAUTIFULL!!!

On a cold, overcast, and windy winter day I stopped at Castlewood Canyon, which runs under Hwy 83 a few miles south of Franktown, Colorado.
Here is an image from that visit and no I did not lose any fingers or toes to frostbite but it was not the most pleasant outing.
Enjoy from the warmth of your home or office.
Happy Holidays to All!
