I took this from the window of my home in Colorado Springs on Thanksgiving Day a couple of years back. I heard the gas from the balloon and looked out the window to see what it was. Just happened to catch him flying by with my Canon A70. The pictures were stitched using Cannon ZoomBrowser

Wow, Chris, you are here so much! Thinkin' about moving here? :D I love seeing your awesome shots in places I recognize.
My favorite in this gallery was the 2nd to last on the 1st page, with the yellow flowers going up to the mountain. I really like how it leads your eye into the picture, and I really like the lens flare. Gives it a very real feeling, like you can imagine yourself in that spot.

Thanks Tori! The In-laws live in Spanish Fark so we are usually up there once a month or so. My wife gets tired of all the driving but I love it. Every weekend I am off and about looking for something to take pictures of. This weekend, I took a trip up to Cedar Breaks Park just east of Cedar City, UT. I also visited Yankee Meadows up Parowan Canyon. Here is a link

Beautiful pictures, Chris (in both galleries). You captured the warm autumn colours really well. Perhaps I can go to the forest or the dunes myself this weekend to capture some autumn colours, before it is too late...
By the way, I noticed that in some of your pictures the sky is dark blue. I really like the effect. Did you use a polariser or did you do that in PP?
heres a couple that i shot taking a walk at the park.

I used a circular polarizer and under exposed the shot by 2 stops. It almost makes the sky go black! I love this effect, especially against the white aspen trees without their leaves. Thanks for the nice remarks.

Let's see if I can link these right. This is Mt. Baker, Christmas 2005. I had never seen snow (from Houston, the sauna), so my BIL took me on a drive up Mt. Baker. I keep telling people these are NOT black and white photos! :D My camera is a Sony DSC-V1, that started having focusing problems a few months ago. I just recently noticed that it had obviously been dropped, so I've been searching these forums for ideas for my new camera.
The second one makes me think of an alien landscape.

ETA: ok, how do I get the photos to post bigger? My album is on Webshots and I used the linkage that they gave me for this.

2) Fort Point, San Francisco at around sunset this past May
3) Twin Peaks, San Francisco at night in May (friggin cold up there with the 30mph winds, very difficult to keep the camera still even on a tripod)
4) Point Loma National Cemetary, San Diego, CA

Very nice shot! You asked for opinions :D so I do think it's a little under-exposed. You could probably bring out more color in PP. I like the composition, in general, but the boat at the bottom and the mountain at the top are a little to close to the edge for my taste. But still, a great picture, and I hope you keep posting.

Here are a couple of the Rockie Mountains. Comments please!
Nice pictures, zmikers. I think the image quality of the pictures is still ok, despite being taken on film. They are a bit soft, but that probably is caused by the scan and resizing for the web. I think that the dynamic range is actually a bit better than digital, especially in the highlights. Despite being bright, the sky and mountains in the background are still contrasty. I feel that with digital, this would have looked much more washed out.
The first shot is great, very nice composition. With the second, I would have stepped back just a little, to get more of the trees in the foreground in the shot, they would then create some sort of frame for the mountain scene in the background.
zmikers
02-21-2007, 07:23 AM
Prospero, thanks for the comments. I agree with getting more of the trees in the second one, but I decided that 1000s of miles away and years later. If I ever get back there again then maybe, but for now I will have to live with what I got. Live and learn right.

Adam, thank you very much for that!:D I've learned something very important over the last few years. When I was still shooting with film I was a lot more cautious about my shots. Now that I have a dslr, I feel subcontiously that I'm thinking, "well if it doesn't work I can fix it in photoshop." I hate that. I take every shot telling myself to get it right in the camera first. Those shots above had zero PP, just a tiny crop in the second one.

Those hills look mighty green for California. Were they "enhanced" a tad by Adobe ("Photographic Botox"), or was the shot taken after some heavy rains? In any event, I wouldn't mind waking up to that sight every morning.

gmtech, great shot. I like the way the sun hits from the side and gives it a very warm glow. I might try cropping it down a bit. Give it more of a panorama feel. You could crop up to the fence and then take some off of the sky to keep your rule of thirds intact. But I really like this shot. Not too busy and very warm!

You're welcome, but please remember that this was just a suggestion from me. At the end of the day, it is your photo and if you like the way it is then it is perfect. Suggestions are only that. Everybody has different styles and that is why photography is "creative." I'm sure many people might disagree with me and some may agree. Anyway, blah blah blah. Tori, this one is quite nice. I like the warm colours. The fence definitly adds depth to the scene. Personally I would have taken the picture just a bit further, so that there's nothing covering the right side of the fence. But it definitly works the way it is now as well.

Here's one of the pictures I took on my wintersports vacation three weeks ago. It was taken with my old camera, the Olympus C450. I couldn't take the D50 with me on the piste like I did last year, because for the largest part of the day the sight was too short and thus the risk of falling was too great for me to risk taking the D50 and lenses.
Luckily I did have the old point and shoot when the clouds broke one afternoon:

Beautiful shots, Prospero. I really like how tack-sharp they are. So last year, did you actually take your D50 with you
on the ski trail? You must be an excellent skier! And thanks for your comment on my shot. Next time, I'll try the shot
without the foreground bush.

Thanks Tori. Yes, last year I skied with my D50 in a backpack. My skiing is pretty good, so as long as the sight is good and I ski carefully, the chances that I fall are minimal. This year there were only a couple of moments with good sight; it was snowing every day :(. Anyway, such conditions usually don't make nice pictures anyway.
Here's a picture of the weather condition most of the time:

Very nice pictures, Chili. I really like the sepia treatment of the pictures.
The third picture is my favourite. It has a great composition. The usuage of lines leading your eyes through the picture is very good.
It might have been even better if you cropped the sky above the powerlines. In that way the horizon would be at 1/3rd of the picture's height from the top of the picture (this is called "the rule of thirds"). Placement of the horizon at that place often makes a picture look even better.

Hi prospero. Thanks for your appreciation. Appreciate your suggestion. I'm absolutely aware of the rule of the thirds:). But I'm afraid it wouldn't work for me. If I cut out the sky....the idea of solitude in infinity is lost. Rules aren't the only thing to be satisfied. Communication must be taken care of as well.:) Thanks anyway.
toriaj,a lot is wrong here:)...the pictures need sharpening, the sepia needs to be toned down and I need to stop holding the camera askew:)....
I realized after a few shots that I was consistently holding the camera a little down on the right. I'll correct that. I love the desert too. Hope to have more.
here's one more with the askew horizon....what I like about this pic is,it was shot in color...but the light of the sun made it almost monochrome...and hence....to me.....timeless....

I agree, the most important thing about these rules is that they can be broken :). I break the rule of thirds myself quite often. Having more sky in this case does indeed enhance the feeling of solitude.
Here's a landscape picture I took a couple of months ago in the wetlands close to my town (the horizon is also not at a third from the top, but I just couldn't get myself to crop of the blue sky in the upper part of the picture)

Thanks for the kind words toriaj :) I actually intentionally desaturated that picture to give it a slightly "timeless" film look. I took the picture as just a quick snapshot and was pleasantly surprised that it was quite an attractive composition. I was recently on a "Route 66" driving trip across California and a bit of Arizona.
This is my car on Hwy 66 in the middle of the California Mojave desert. I got out to look for signs of the old "town" of Bagdad. Nothing is left on the road of Bagdad or a few other places that dried up after the newer freeway took the traffic from them. I'm next to railroad tracks that the road follows.
25174
I think the train spur "marks the spot" of Bagdad. Some years back, an author of a book about Route 66 found a broken tree with a small sign saying Bagdad, but I could not find it.

I would echo some of Phils comments - I like both shots. The colour is good with it's pastel like appearance and that dreamy look - you could boost the saturation - but personally I like the way it looks.

Thanks, Geoff. I like both versions as well. And the color version does have the saturation boosted. It just didn't have a very strong effect. I kept increasing it until it started adding noise, and then I backed off a bit.

Here's a picture I took yesterday, after the sun had set. I used a long exposure to show the movement of the clouds.

Lovely colors, Bynx, and nicely exposed (and that was a tricky one with all the bright sun and deep shade.)
I think I'd crop a bit off the bottom, just a couple inches. It might make it feel less static.
Hi Adam. When you say crop off a couple inches at the bottom are you thinking on the inside or outside of the base of the first two vertical supports? Ive tried to see where you could be suggesting and Im not sure what you mean by less static? Any further help is appreciated. Thanks.

Here's a quick example. I find that instead of emphasizing the railing, the cropped version draws the eye to follow along the road, giving a sense of movement. Also, when the railing continues beyond the frame, it feels like the viewer is inside the picture.

That's sort of funny as the image is only 6 inches high on my monitor. So, yeah, just cut off the bridge :-)
I like it as-is if that matters. (Edit - oh, is this the cropped version just above? If so, where's the original?)

Hey there I am new to the SF Bay area, and one night while exploring (with my camera and tripod in the car, of course) I came across this lovely night scene in Santa Cruz.
The photo here is straight from the camera; no processing or cropping. It was converted from RAW to jpeg by a flickr upload plug-in for Aperture.
Comments and advice, please.

Welcome to the forums, and to the Bay Area! Both are great. I really like the juxtaposition between the white light of the moon & its reflection anf the yellow light of the street lights.

I don't think I've posted this one before but if I have then really sorry for clogging up the thread and have you see it again. So anyways, to get this I had to climb up some big ass rocks with a bunch of barnacles on them barefooted. For sure well worth it though.

This was taken with my S5. 10 second exposure at 5:45 a.m. Unfortunately, the result was a bit bright, (and yellow) so I had to do some tweaking, and here was my final result.

GabOrcinus, I love the one with the cow! Great composition. It looks a little skewed to the cyan, though ... the sky and mountains seem to show that. And I'm not sure what that cyan object is on the left. It might be easy to clone it out. Great shot!

Also, love the Castellabate in Southern Italy shot earlier!
