Is butterfly photo a reseller or do they sell all ner products because all the prices I see there are very cheap(if it's too good to be true it probably is). I was wondering because if they sell new products, I may get the new nikon coolpix Z1 from them. Speaking of the Z1 does anybody know of a professional review for it, or where I could find more info on it, it looks awesome.

I just placed an order with butterfly this morning. I checked them at resellerratings.com and they are not great, but not too bad. I believe they are just another camera and electronics reseller that makes their business by having the lowest prices.

I've had mixed results with their company, having ordered two cameras in a year. The prices are great, products are 100% brand new, and safe/easy transaction online. My only complaint is the slow shipping time, especially for a Canon Digital Rebel I ordered on Monday morning and had been shipped out this Friday. I'd average it around a 10/10 with product and packaging, 7/10 overall satisfaction.

I ordered my FZ15 with them on WEB two weeks ago.
A salesman called next AM and left a message for me to call back ' about my order'. Nothing specific. When I called back, he was busy so I left a message to tell him to just ship my camera, I won't be ordering anything extra. For the next 3 days, I get email message daily on the same thing.....call us about the order....that's it.
Then on the fourth day, I called back and, instead of trying to connect directly to his salesman, I pressed 'new order #' to get into customer service quickly. Only then, someone verified my order to be send the next day. And agreed to send it on a 2 day service ; no extra charge.
I suspect that they upgrade this quite often.
All in all the experience wasn't that great. I got the camera at good price in about a week from order to receive. If they didn't send my all those message and then would answer when I called back, I would have been better.
BuyDig, Buy.com, nextegg, Ecost are better in that regard and by the way, in that order with Buydig the best.

I've bought 3 cameras from them in the past without any problems
Your best bet is to place your order by phone rather than purchasing online, that way you can verify that they have what you want in stock, plus it gives you a chance to haggle with them on price, extended warranty and shipping  (you'd be surprised how much of a discount they're willing to give you)
Just don't let them talk you into getting accessories you don't need
Like all other independant camera stores, their staff has earned their degree in sales tactics ;)

I ordered a Canon PowerShot S2 IS on 7/1/05, then got the notorious "call us" message on 7/3/05. I replied that they should say what was on their minds in an e-mail. When I got no response, on 7/6/05 I e-mailed them and cancelled the order, after which I ordered from Profeel. To this cancellation I once again received the boiler-plate reply "Thank you for your on-line purchase. We hope your shopping experience was pleasant. Please contact us regarding Your order ###." I responded, once again stating that I was canceling. to which I again received the boiler-plate message quoted above, this around noon on 7/7/05. A little after 1800 I received a shipping confirmation from them, which was about the same time Profeel had the camera delivered and in my hands. I again e-mailed them to point out that I had cancelled, and when FedEx tried to deliver on 7/11/05, I refused to accept. They did charge my credit card, but not as ButterflyPhoto, or as "BDD Solutions Inc." the name they specified in the order confirmation, but instead to a "Digital Acquisition Cor(?)." I consider this an attempt at fraud, and would never consider having anything to do with them, other than reporting them to ResellerRatings, the FTC, and the BBB. (Profeel was as good as they were bad!)

It seems a lot of these companies use the call us back sales tactic. Adorama has an option to check on their sales order page to not have a salesman contact you ... I didn't check it once and you guess it the call us back email came the next day ... ... I've placed four orders since that using the don't contact option and not one delay in shipping those orders.

The reviews i read about butterfly photo from this site turned me off to them. However, I had to be curious. I called and asked some questions about a camera and the associate didnt answer my questions, just talked. I definitely felt as if the associate was there to take an order not to help a customer. He also was very complementary of the store by telling me how great of a deal it was.
I would recommend B&H. I've only dealt with them twice, but my wife has been in the photography business for a few years loves the place. And anyone i've spoken to there seemed very genuine in offering help to me, the inexperienced novice.

Placed an order for a S2 IS on Friday evening, got a message on Monday morning to call about my order. Now, I was kindof expecting this - I am shipping to an address that's different from my billing address. Their site, as well as the order confirmation email, gave instructions on how to add an alternate shipping address to your credit card's file. My credit card company mentioned something about having the merchant tell the rep to check the "Notes" section of the file when calling to verify, so I figured there may be a slight mix up.
So I returned butterfly's call and indeed it was a problem verifying the shipping address. I told him what the credit card company had said and all was fine.
He did try to upsell me on a UV filter and lens adapter. After I declined, he dropped the price and I folded :o .
A few hours later I had a shipping confirmation email. All in all, a good, quick experience. The upsell was mildly annoying, but the rep actually sounded like he knew something about the camera and suggested a worthwhile accessory that I was planning on getting anyways. He also didn't bring it up until after the shipping address problem was resolved and the call was nearly finished.
