My beloved A70 recently bit the dust (actually the ceramic tile) and gave me the dreaded E18, so I'm in the market for a new dc. After agonizing and researching for umpteen hours, including this forum, I'd decided on the A80, only to find it to be discontinued and very difficult to get my hands on for a decent price (I ordered it from two different vendors, only to be given calls from each saying they're actually out of stock). I tried the A75 and found that over half of my low-light, indoor shots of my toddler were out of focus... WAY more than I had with my A70. So now I'm thinking of forking over the extra $$ and getting the A95 instead with its better sensor and extra mp. I've reviewed all the information available on the A95 and I feel fairly confident it'll work for me, but I'd like to get some validation from anyone who knows more than me (that'd be just about anyone at ALL, heh heh) before I spend that much. Do you have any thoughts? Here are my main requirements and the types of shooting I plan to do:
1. Low light shots - most of my photos tend to be of my favorite subject these days -- my two-year-old -- and we live in a northern climate so a majority of time they're indoor. I really need a camera that can perform well in low light situations, and the A75 didn't seem to fit the bill. Would the A95 be any different?
2. Action shots - the above-mentioned toddler rarely sits still and while the A70 did a decent job of stopping the action (using sports mode), the A75 was AWFUL and the shutter lag horrible. Could I expect better from the A95?
3. Point and shoot for now but would like option of learning more later - I really need a dc that will perform well in auto at this point in my life but I do plan to take some classes as it's something I'm very interested in. I hate to limit myself, especially when spending this much money.
4. Photo quality is of utmost importance - I don't plan to enlarge photos more than to 8X10 now, but as I improve would love the option of doing something larger. I found with my A70 that I had no need to take my child to a portrait photographer as I was extremely satisfied with some of my shots and made my own reprints and enlargements... I would like this to continue and would enjoy printing them larger as I become more skilled.
I guess I'm just hoping someone will have an opinion that will push me to make a decision! My main concerns are that pushing 5 mp onto this small camera will result in more noise and that the photo quality will suffer and I'll wish I'd gone with the Canon loyalty thing and spent $150 on a new A70. I really loved everything about the A80 and wouldn't worry at all in getting that, but I can't find it and I also wonder if I shouldn't just spend the extra $70-100 for an extra mp and all the upgrades of the A95.
Do you A80 users foresee any problems with the A95?
Does anything in my requirements bring up a red flag, or make you think I should consider another camera (I've toyed with the S60, the S410, and the S1 IS)? I've compared them all on the side by side thing but I know too little to make an educated guess based on that.
ANY thoughts would be most appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
TJ
P.S. Hope this isn't a re-post -- I'm having trouble figuring this forum out and can't see my first post -- sorry if this is the second one!
