Hello,
Just purchased a SD300. I want to buy a 512 Secure Digital Card.
Is there a difference between Sandisk and Kingston? I happens that Kingston is running a rebate.
Any thoughts??

What do you mean by a "regular speed card"?

No need to go for an Ultra-II (faster) card for the SD300. The regular speed Sandisk cards are fast enough that it can handle everything the camera can write at full speed.

Sandisk and Kingston are both $35 for a 512 SD Card. Do all SD cards have the same speed?

So I called both SanDisk and Kingston. Kingston said that the 512 SD Card is not in their database for the Canon SD300. Basically it has not been tested. They will guarantee up to a 128. SanDisk basically said the same thing.
Canon said all cards should work. I might just stick with the 128 Sd card. When you said that not all cards have the same speed, should I be buying a specific brand?
Just looking to get the best card for my new camera. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't worry about the size of the card. I have had a 512 Sandisk card for my SD300 for 5 months and there have been no problems. Others have the 1 gig card, again, they work just fine. I wouldn't worry about the lack of formal testing processes for these size cards, it's proven to be a non-issue.

I'm using a 2GB (Sandisk) card in my SD500. Works great...

I have heard over and over that if you want to take high quality video, especially at 60 frames per second you should DEFINITELY go for the high speed card. Do a search in this forum for this or the SD400 cameras and you will see that over and over, also in the forum at dpreview.com. I had great luck with the sandisk ultra II 1 gb card in my SD300. Its a one time purchase that will last a long time and not limit you in any way.

I have an SD300 and a regular speed Sandisk 512Meg card and I can assure you that you don't need an Ultra-II to record any of the video modes. You get unlimited recording on all but the 60fps which is limited by the camera to 60 seconds in length. I can also shoot in burst mode for an unlimited amount of time. The burst mode might not hold in the SD400 since the still image size is larger, but it should have no effect on the video modes.
