First, let me thank you very much for the advice on the digitalliquidateors, bestprice cameras and expresscamera sites! That probably saved me a lot of headache and money, the prices seemed great - but too great to be true!

But this leaves with a dilemma: These stores were actually offering kits including the Canon Rebel XT (black body) with the EF-S 17-85mm IS lens (I'd like to order the 50 mm f1.8 in addition.)
Any suggestion, where in the San Francisco Bay Area (east bay) to buy such a kit? The local stores seem only to offer the kit with the 18-55mm lens.

I found a store on ebay that has the kit I am looking for: Roberts Distributor
The ebay ratings seem to be great for those guys... any experience?

Sorry as I don't buy from ebay. That's not saying they can't be trusted but I prefer to deal with a known reputable company instead.

I want to buy from a reputable company...
Roberts distributor (http://www.robertsimaging.com) seem to be 'real' with three stores in Indianapolis. Plus the offer it good, but not better than for example B&H (but they are out of stock for this kit).
Does anyone know them?

I just talked to a friend living in Indianapolis. Roberts imaging is around for a long time and seem to be a good store. I'll give it shot!

Well you did right checking them out first. Ebay can be an easy way for a company to cut Internet expenses while selling products ... Good Luck

San Jose Camera (located close to Valley Fair) has it pretty cheap for a local independent store.

Edit - Erg, I read your post wrong. I saw 20D instead of XT. Are you asking for a kit that includes the 17-85 or can you buy them separately?

This store charges $880 for the body only and $540 for the lens, not too bad for a local store. They will charge you $80 for the 50mm f/1.8. If you want your gear right away and if you want to have the viable option of returning defective items easily, this is the way to go.

Well, that would have been an option. Prices are about the same. Thanks for the hint - maybe next order!
I already ordered yesterday at Roberts Imaging. Let's see how it works. Supposed to be delivered on Wednesday next.
I figured since I have to go to Indianapolis on business twice within the next 4 weeks I can show up at the store if there is a serious problem ;-)
Cheers! Dirk

I have that body and lens and I believe B&H Photo offers the kit you are looking for. www.bhphoto.com

You can buy without hesitation from them. Very reputable.

Thanks, I saw that offer as well, but they didn't have it on stock.
How do you like to camera and the lens?

I'm very pleased with the combination. The weight to size ratio is just right IMHO and the lens delivers nice, sharp pics and the IS is more than a little useful. I think you'll be happy if you go this route.
