BUDGET - $350 (including camera, case and card)

SIZE - not important

FEATURES
- 5MP
- optical zoom: Standard = 3x-4x
- image quality is very important, 9 on a 10 scale
- manual controls are a plus, although my wife and son will also use the camera so the automated functions need to be relatively intuitive

GENERAL USAGE
- used for typical "family photography" of holidays, vacations, sporting events with sons participating
- largest sized print will be 8x10
- shooting will be mostly outdoor, indoor shots will be 30%
Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?

MISCELLANEOUS
I've downselected to the Canon A95 and Nikon Coolpix 5600. I understand the A95 is relatively "noisy" at ISO above 100, but is it noticeable in 4x6 or even 8x10 size shots? Is red-eye an issue in the A95? I don't care very much about the Canon's cruddy video modes.
- Which camera seems like a better value overall?
- Which camera appears to take better resolution/detailed pics?

Special features? None required, although option for wide angle and rotating LCD would be nice. I know A95 has a rotating LCD, but that feature seems relatively unimportant.

Thanks for your advice!

Forget the 5600 which have only a 1/2.5" ccd size.
The direct opponent to the A95 is the Coolpix 5900, both with 1/1.8" ccd.

The main difference between the 2 cameras are manual settings for the Canon and battery for the Nikon.

They are both very good 5Mpx compact DC.
