Hi!

I'm wondering about this every time I read reviews of compact digital cameras (meaning all the non-DSLR, all-in-one type, not just the pocket type; is there a better term for this?). Which "compact" digital cameras compare best to digital DSLRs in terms of technical capabilities (with average AUTO settings with no speed tuning - in terms of operation timings, shutter speed, cycle times, etc.; not image quality)? Do any even match them?

Thanks!

None that I'm aware of.

None even come close, especially when it comes to speed and performance. This is an area that I don't expect to see improved in the near future.

I've been very happy with the powershot Pro1. It most deffinitly doesn't have the ISO range or the speed of a dSLR but as far as set at ISO 50 when using flash or outdoors in light it's been great.

Depends on what your subject needs are will dictate what camera. The Rebel used is a GREAT deal too, can find them for 500$ and it's a truly amazing camera up to ISO 800.

Alright, thanks for answering, guys. But I'd like to point out that I'm not looking for information because of purchasing one. Just out of sheer curiosity. And I don't mean which ones can go toe-to-toe with a DSLR (that I know, none that I read of can), but which come as-close-as-possible to a D-SLR, give or take some distance. :D

BhopperJ-

Take a look at the new Fuji F-10. Yep, it is point and shoot. However, it may indeed be the forerunner of a whole new generation of digital cameras because it has a CCD capable of up to ISO 1600 and produces tack sharp 6mp images even with a lousy lens and operating system.

while there is no p&S that's as good as even the worst DSLR, there is no technical reason preventing manufacturers making theri cmaeras blazing fast. no doubt, in the future, p&S times and speeds and probably even quality will catch up

Canon Pro1 is good example. Its high iso noise cant match a DSLR esp a canon DSLR. But you get a true 8mp resolution, a 28-200mm f/2.4 L lens thats very sharp throughout the aperture range and focal length,
a large high resolution flipout LCD for preview, built in ND filter all in a much more portable package.

ALso consider this: Most DSLR lens need to be stop down above f/5.6 for the best results and zoom lens seldom go below f/3.5 unless you start to paying big bucks. Besides like all canon digicams the iso sensitivity is about 2/3 stop more than rated compared to a DSLR. Which means a pro1 at iso200 f/2.4 can get the more or less same shutter speed as a DSLR at iso800 f/4.

Below is indoor lowlight comparison of D70 and Pro1( taken from dpreview). Both shooting the same subject at the same time. Pics resized to 800x600

My Mum just bought a Pro1. I've had a bit of a muck around with it and I like it. She loves the fact that she can attach the existing accessory flash from her EOS 50. Nice unit and your sample pic looks OK.
