Any comments on the battery differences between these cameras? Any difference between the picture quality? What is the best choice?

The one you like.

Oh, and just for the heck of it, look at the Canon A75 too. ;)

I'm interested in the 4100 as well and did some comparisons with the 4200. Since I'm looking for a shirtpocket camera, I've ruled out the 4300.

4100 - 35-105 f2.8-4.9 lens
4200 - 38-114 f2.8-4.9 lens

Slightly different magnification in the viewfinder

4200 has a better LCD (1.6" vs 1.5", 110K pixels vs 88K)

4100 has slightly faster shutter (1/3000 vs 1/2000)

4200 allows manual setting of ISO (80, 100, 200, 400)
4100 doesn't allow manual setting of ISO (50-200)

4200 has matrix, center weighted, and spot metering, 4100 just has matrix

4200 has slightly better flash

4200 has slightly better manual white balance control

4200 has better AF (can someone explain the details of AF manual area selection?)

4200 has more scene selection modes

Same movie modes

4100 has slightly more internal memory (14.5 vs 12)

4200 has more options for picture enhance

4100 uses AA batteries
4200 uses proprietary Lithium-Ion batteries

IMO, the major distinctions are that the 4200 has more features for manual use, the 4100 is cheaper and uses AA batteries.
