The quality of the pictures is great. An idea perhaps, would be to try these shots in black and white, or/and crop down to the subject matter. in the first shot, i would suggest less window. on the second shot, i would edit out the drawstings. but, dont get me wrong, these are excellent shots, these are just my thoughts. thanks for sharing the photos. :)

I appreciate the input. I'm still learning how to take better shots. I wanted to do more, but I don't have a reference guide.

Maybe you can suggest something that is good and not going to break the bank?

I'll try to take some better macro shots, asap.

Thanks.

The best suggestion i have is, practice, practice, and more practice. Get a feel for your shots. when you take a picture, frame it in your mind before you press the shutter. Try many diff. settings until you find the ones you like. Hope this helps.

Thank you.

I really appreciate your input because you are a vet around here.

I think the first one is a lil sharper, too.

Maybe I can see some of your macro shots?

Hi! I'mnot a Vet' but i did a few macros too, just starting.
I like you're Bottle and the 1st flower (dont know english name, sorry).
You're 1st picture isn't really a macro in my point of view, not close enough.
And i also think you may try to not always center that much your subject, tryin to play with the blurry background effect...

Here's a few i did. Comments appreciated too ;)

sbnr, first, i like what you did with the pics. The coke bottle is more of a Macro. but, when taking close-ups, beware of shadows, sometimes we are our own worst enemy. Second, thanks for the high praise, but, while I am a Vet(ARMY) in that regard, when it comes to photography, i will always consider myself a passionate amateur. AlkaPhunk, excellent Macros, My favorites are the first Fly, great detail on that one, and the water drops, very crisp and clear. oh, and by the way, sbnr, most of my Macros are on the Small World thread, let me know what you think. :)

I appreciate the support in this thread. It really makes me happy to see such responses to a new guy like me. The guy who did the shots with the Nikkon were all great. I liked the water the best! :D Bald Eagle, I checked out the SMALL WORLD thread and saw that lizard you did. It was nice.

I just got off of work and it's too late to shoot anything outside, so I did one of my jump drive.

I did crop it so that annoying camera shadow wouldn't appear.

I hope the flash wasn't too much, the lighting in my house sucks...

try some unusual angle (rather than a head one view!) another neat trick is to use composite focus (where you selctively focus on thin slices at f/2.8 and combine them all using photoshop.) it gives you amazing dof.

I don't understand what you are telling me bout slicing the focus. I don't know all the terms for photography and/or tricks. I do have Photo Shop, but I don't even know how to use that other than crops, reducing size and other simple stuff like that.

I want to do shots from new angles, but it's hard to because I don't have that many locations to shoot something and the lighting is bad in my house. I don't have the money to buy photography lamps, so I rely on natural light whenever possible.

I took these shots head on, but if you examine them, you'll see the light on them isn't too good.

hi snbr!

here's an example of selective focus: hold o' i'll tell you how to do it:

suppose you want to shoot really close up, and you find that despite going downt o f/8 (the min in most consumer digcams) you still have huge areas out of focus---what you do is swithc to manual focus, and open up the lens (large f/valeus) and focus on multiple ppoints, so that every plane of view is in focus.

it's a wonderful idea to screw things onto a tripod and to use a remote release while all this is going on, so you don't have to reposition shots on photoshop.

once done, combine all shots on photoshop (as diff layers) and erase away the parts out of focus. once done, you get something like this.....

just one more helpful (i hope) tip: never NEVER use flash! natural lighting is way way out! (except when you shoot insects) for the shot above, i used direct sunlight filtering in through the green torch, which i cello taped to the camera lens.

Okay...I'm going to try those tips.

I took some more macros outside:
