Have posted this on another forum as well but thought you guys here would appreciate the details as well....

This is an extract from an email i had asked the Panasonic Sales division in New Zealand about the Slim 7 and the FX8
The big thing in here being the FX8 should be getting released in the next few months (in New zealand that is :) ) AND DOUBLE THE BATTERY POWER IN THE FX8!!

".... however I do know about the FX8. This model will be introduced to the NZ market in the next two to three months and has a number of improvements over the FX7.

There are some new features but in relation to the ones you hv enquired about, the biggest change is the battery life which has now been doubled over that of the FX7. This has been achieved by a new and improved processing engine in conjunction with a new li-ion battery.

On the matter of the LCD, the FX8 will maintain the same one as the FX7. The FX7 was the number one selling compact camera in the Japanese market from the time it was introduced last August through until February this year and the same was true in Singapore. It has also been a hugely successful model in NZ as well and my recommendation would be to visit the market and evaluate one for yourself... the LCD performs extremely well......"

Also i asked about the colour options to which they replied

"At this stage only silver will be available for the FX8 at introduction. There are alternative colours being tagged for other countries but due to NZ safety standard requirements re battery chargers etc. we are not able to introduce these. I do want to stock a couple of colour options so am working closely with Japan on this but it will not be finally determined for a month or so. "

I soooo cant wait for this!! Its a pity i need a camera by June as thats when my sis and lil nephew come over from Ohio who i havent seen in 5 years so i might have to consider the FX7...i wonder if the shop would let me trade in for the FX8 when its released ;-)

FX7 battery power isn't so bad, and you can buy batteries cheap on Ebay to use as spares. I have 2 extras and I have only needed 1 of them once. I got the 2 for about $12 each.

Well it will definately be interesting to see what the other new features will be....specialing considering there is a new processing engine i wonder if issues like noise have been looked at....
Even though i have to wait 2-3 months being in NZ, hopefully its gonna b released earlier elsewhere so there are some good reviews out by the time i can buy it.....

i think i just found my dream camera!

> takes SD cards
> compact
> large screen
> not less than 5MP
> VGA video (finally)
> image stabilisation
> widescreen (best fuji invention ever)
> based of the FX7 which provided good picture quality
> i live in europe

Don't be so happy about that, looking at the image samples, it's very noisy even at lowest iso speed. The engine consumes less power but it's also inferior to the one in the fx7. The image is blurrier than the fx7's. At first I thought it was only smooth, but unsharp masking showed that was no more detail in the picture :(

a slight lack of sharpness is nothing set against the benefits of OIS for my shakey hands.

besides which, i'm no photographer, i just want something easy and widely capable.

this sounds ideal.

i like the sound of the Fuji F10 as well, but it doesn't have OIS, widescreen, or take SD cards.

this camera sounds nice! I especially like the image stabilization feature. I'm not being ignorant, but why isn't the FX8 available in the US??

Hope because there'll be some 8mpx panasonic wonder in a thinner body with less noise and less maze-artifacts with stronger flash and mpeg4 video with 5x5pixel readout to archieve even better low light capability. Or maybe it's because Leica is dying and the US market would need too much so it's a delicate step to sell all they got left and start a new series of cams in october with a new kind of lens.
