As a newby to digital photography , I am looking to buy a card reader, but have a question. After I have transfered a number of photo's onto my PC, & then want to get a number of these photos developed at a processing shop, can I transfer photo's from my PC back onto my SD card, so I can then take my SD card to the shop, with only the photo's on I want processed ?

Also does anyone know a good reader that takes both a SD card & also a Memory Stick PRO Duo ??

All help greatly appreciated
thanks

yes, you can do this. i saw a 5-way memory card reader at best buy this weekend, usb connection, for about $25. it would read both sd and memory stick, i think. just go to your local computer bits store and read the packaging. they all say pretty plainly which formats they support.

think of a memory card as just exactly like a floppy disk, only it stores a bunch more pictures, takes up less space, works faster, and fails less often. functionally, however, they're the same.

Most likely which ever software tool used to retrieve the photos, whether it be windows, or an editing/organizing app that you use, it should alert you with a info box that reports all photos have been successsfully transfered to your harddrive [pc]. Then it will ask you if you would like to delete them from the memory card, you can obviously choose not to if you so choose.

In the event that you do not use any application to transfer the photos, ie, you use windows explorer to access the drive in the card reader that contains your memory card, simply do a select all [I right click any white area and then use the ctrl+a short cut, which highlights all your pictures, then wanting to leave the pictures there on the memory card and move copies of them to a hardrive I would then do a ctrl+c for copy... navigate to your photo folder and right click and select paste.

This should do the trick. This is a real store that I frequented when I lived in San Jose. What a place. Great prices. Geek heaven. :)

one other question, is using and transfering on & from PC to cards/sticks via card readers any better than uploading direct from camera onto PC and then burning photo's onto disc ?
and can photo processing shops process you photo's from a burnt CD ?

Thanks again

If your camera is battery powered, you save the batteries. I like doing it from the card reader because I find it a bit faster. They basically work as an extra disc drive just as the camera will. I use the windows explorer, and really it doesn't make much of a difference. I just find that when I am transferring 0.5 gig or 1 gig of images, the reader won't cause problems while the camera battery could die on you.

As for photo processing shops. That probably depends on the shop. In the most basic sense, I believe Walmart accepts CD's. I've never tried it though. One nice thing is that you can use Walmart online to upload the photos and then have them waiting at your local walmart for pickup.

I'm not sure about other services, but I'd imagine many places accept CDs.

Shouldn't the product be a " Card Reader / Writer"? Thats what I just bought.

Most cameras use usb 1.0 and a card reader will use usb 2.0. Images will transfer 4 times faster with the card reader... I never use my camera to transfer images only my Sandisk USB 2.0 8 in 1 card reader... I got it through newegg for like 20 bucks... costs close to 35 dollars at best buy at the time...

THanks again, for the info. As I am in thr UK, I will check first if a number of shops will process from CD, before I decide on a card reader on not at this time.
