I have canon sd200;.

I am having alot of trouble figuring out what resolution to save the pics at and what size. I know 117k is the limit for uploading on here, so what are the best settings iwthout losing quality? Can I do this with the camera automatically so everytime I dont have to resize in photoshop? thanks

Some of us cheat and upload to our photo-hosting site (full size) and then copy the "small" version back to our desktop for upload to DCRP. It may seem like a round about way, but it's really very simple and quick.

I use smugmug ($30 per year unlimited storage). There are some freebees, but they are fairly limited. If you are just using it for upload and resize then maybe free will work.

If you like it and subscribe I would appreciate it if you would use me as a reference.

1. Don't compromise your photo quality just so you can upload a small replica of it to this site. Your full-size 3MP images should be around ~1MB or so? You wouldn't want to be limited by the restriction of having to downsize them to come out <117K, unless the only thing you'll ever do with the images is upload them here, which is unlikely. Personally, I find that process of saving, finding out the file size is too big, increasing JPEG compression, yada yada, to be bothersome, so I follow George's route.

2. If you upload to a site like Smugmug, you can upload the full-size image, and order prints if you wish, as well as creating links to your images that you can post here. Instead of doing what George suggested, i.e., uploading Smugmug's "small" version to this site, it's a lot easier and quicker to just grab your photo's unique URL and paste that link into this forum. That takes even less space than the uploaded "small" graphic file, and by doing that, you can show us any size you want.

Check out http://pics.bbzzdd.com.

I believe total storage per account is limited to 10 MB, but individual file sizes (within that limit) are not regulated.

Edit - Read thread wrong. I always use 800x600 since it fits on most people's monitors. I use either 60 or 80 for JPG quality.

Yahoo Photos is not a bad way to go. It is free, and it has unlimited storage. It isn't the best site, but I only use it to show friends and family in a quick manner. I'm not a professional, and I don't find any advantage to posting my images onto pay sites. You can upload large photos and print the large photos. Unfortunately, what you view on the site is a reduced sized photo.

Never-the-less it is adequate for my purposes. The reduced photo ends up being what I post here.

I use Yahoo - but I have never thought to do that!
What I do is I open my chosen pic in Serif (Photo shop or Paint shop or whatever will do) then I resize the image down to 600,700, or even 800 along the long side. Then when I save I set the compression to reduce the file size ~ the nice thing with Serif is it allows you to check how much impact the compression will have on the quality before saving. Obviously I give the pic a new variant on the file name in order to keep the orig in tact. Then the rest is the usual attch procedure.
