What size UV filter do I need for the FZ5 and where can I order it? These seem pretty straight forward, but can anyone recommend a specific make and model? I've had problems getting third party lenses to fit cameras in the past.

you need a 55mm filter. Filterhouse.com has the Hoya multi-coated ones for $18.51 and the Pro version for $6 more.

I spoke with the guy at nightowlcamera.com and he told me not to use a UV filter because it throws off the lens somehow. He claims that Panasonic does not recommend anything on the lens. I'm new to digital photography and really don't know what to think. Any thoughts?

Thanks

While there is a good point to what they told you , fitting a filter on the supplied adapter or an afftermarket adapter will not hurt anything.
As a matter of fact Panasonic sells filters for the FZ cameras as an accessory.(Check the manual.)

But I do not think adding a filter directly to the lens is a good Idea, but mounting one on the adapter is OK. It is what its for.

Thanks for the information. Once again I don't know what I need. So I need a 55mm UV filter and can order it at the website above. What kind of adaptor do I need and where do I get one?

Thanks,
Brian

Unless there is another reason for an aftermarket adaptor, you do not need one. a 55mm filter will screw directly on the lens hood adapter that attaches to the barrel of the lens and is supplied with the camera. You can still attach the lens hood to the adapter with the filter on the adapter.

My 55mm Hoya SMC UV filter seems to just barely hang on to the threads of the hood adapter. I bumped the lens cover that was attached to it against a door and it popped right off the camera. I can't imagine screwing a teleconverter to it, I'm sure it would pull right out.

Is there a stronger way to attach a filter or are there ones with more thread depth?

I have a couple filters and/or steprings that must have escaped quality control as the threads did not seem deep enough. But if you do not have the pro1 version( thin one) of the hoya filter it should have enough threads.
Maybe you should try various ones at a camera store .. or some people with the FZ3 decided they needed to sand a little off the end of the adapter to get a good fit with a filter.
