This was a little Chinese girl performing at a restaurant in Beijing China that we ate dinner at one night.

Here's another one. She can really bend. The pics aren't great, but they were the best I could do as an amateur. I didn't have my external flash with me at the time either.

Nice shots. The performer is stunning too.
Well, what focus option are you using? I think you're using "closest-object priority" or some kind like that (I'm using Nikon. Therefore, I've got no idea of Canon side.). I can see the focus point falls on other objects rather than the performer.
I recommend to use single-spot AF, so you can choose where to focus, for unhurrying events.
