Auto Focus Problems

I seem to have problems getting my camera G6 to focus in macro mode. I am outside and have plenty of sunlight. If I get any closer than about 4" it will not focus on the subject like a flower or whatever. I am using P mode, white balance auto or sunny, Iso 50 or auto and no zoom. There is no lens adapter or filter on the camera. There is no problem if I get far enough away but that kind of defeats the purpose. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Tell me what settings you other G6 owners use for macro. Thank you,

What focus mode is the camera set at? For Macro it needs to be on center point AF.
