Nice shots. Thanks for the location info, can we also get some camera data?

Thank you, George.

All pictures except the last one were taken with Canon Rebel EOS 6.3 mega pixels. I used the automatic landscape mode. The last one is a digital copy of and old film picture.

AND ANother at the Twelve Apostles, in the south coast of Australia. I got these two when i went down under for some six months. Unfortunatlely, i wasn't much of a photographer then, and had only a horrible little P&S--apart from my trusty Olympus S. This was by the P&S--an Olympus C1Z (yes, it's that old)

Three years ago, when i took these pictures, i used to be a great one for sunsets--they were the only things i took. ultimately, i moved on to other things, (spiders and people), and frankly, sunsets begin to leave me cold.

I keep littering photos from my Point Reyes trip all over this forum. Anyway, here are some sunset shots (the better ones I got). The second one shows some lens flare, but it makes for an interesting shot anyway. I feel the flare actually adds a bit to the photo (I have a similar shot without it too).

The shots are off the top of Mt. Vision near Inverness, CA. I shot them with my FZ15. They were shot in point and shoot mode but I set the EV to -2/3 and I used spot metering to get the exposure just the way I wanted. I get lazy with the manual settings although ideally I should probably just use the smallest aperture size and go from there.

Anyway Enjoy... thanks for any comments or feedback too.

Here in sweden a day ago.

The second one is taken some, 2, 3 minutes after the first one. Both are shot throu a window/glass... and the first is in a horizontal line, the trees are on a kind of hilll, but it is just a slight bit crooked, and the second one too, if you look at the flag-pole.

i'm not thrilled with the softness of this shot, but it was taken out the window of an airplane in really awkward lighting, so i live with the softness for the color. :)

canon a95, i'll edit later and post the settings when i'm home and can look them up.

I am still a definite novice, so I hope all of you will go easy on me :). This is far from being an award winning sunset, but as it was one of the very first pics I took with a digital camera, it is one of my favorites. This was shot at Wilson Lake on the Tennessee River in Florence, Alabama. Comments (and helpful criticisms ;)) are welcome.

I agree with George a lovely atmospheric sunset well done SOD. How did you get the ring around the sun, was it natural caused by the atmospheric conditions or is it generated by the lenses in the camera? I have never seen that effect on any sunsets I have taken.

We saw leopards in the Serengeti. The closest we got to seeing a kill was watching a cheetah stalking some antelope. Suddenly the wind shifted, for a split second all the antelopes lifted their heads, and were off with a flash.

Here is a shot I took when I first got my old Fuji Finepix camera (2000 maybe) from the top of Bishop's Peak in San Luis Obispo, California. It is not a great photo. Part of it is because it is so compressed, but I've always liked the shot. If I get a chance, I want to go back and get a sunset shot at the same place. I always loved being on top of that peak when the sun sets over the incoming ocean fog.

Just a side note... Back in those days I was a student, and I somewhat rushed at buying a digital camera without thinking of other items such as memory. Memory cards weren't too cheap at the time, so I always took shots at the lower settings and resized, etc... to save memory.

Like Geoff said, all one really needs is the memory, and the photo always brings that exact moment back to me. It was gorgeous evening. I only wish I had a flashlight for the way down... :o The poison oak was not fun (another memory the photo brings back).

I've just made a layer from darken selected area with photoshop.
Then enlighted a bit this layer, and add contrast too to give a bit more "relief" to the trees.
And to get rid off the left side thing, I used the duplicate tool, smoothly.

I think it could be brighten a lil more, but liked it like that ;)

Here is a late sunrise shot taken from the Derby ring road one morning of Ratcliff Power station powering up for the days requirements. Taken on FZ20 at f8 & 1/250th iso 100. The sepia effect is natural and was not quite as pronounced in real life. The camera seems to have accentuated it somewhat.

fantsatic shot with rich colors! perhaps a little anti-aliasing can be done arond the sailboat to reduce the digital noise...but it's just a suggestion.

Hey,

Wow those are amazing shots. I love the composition, especially how the reflection of the sun comes so far towards the forground. Here's my contribution, these shadows on my front lawn caught my eye one day. The composition isn't my favorite but this was the best one I could find utill the sun went behind that house and the shadows went away  . Comments welcome.

Nice ones, Explorer. Manilla Bay has great sunsets!

Talking about the sun sinking into the sea, here are two girls on a beach, longingly looking at a distant sailboat:

Sunrises should go into the same category shouldn't they? I took these at Myrtle Beach, SC a couple months ago with my Panasonic FZ20. I've heard complaints that the images look too dark, but found that it was their monitor's gamma that was too dark. These look the best on a calibrated monitor.

It would be appreciated if you would post pictures in a little smaller format. One of our contributors suggested something around 800 x 600, depending on your sensor aspect ratio, which seems to work ok on a 1024 x 768 display

Also if you can post multiple images in the same thread we can click on the pointers instead of scrolling through multiple images.

yeah one time right while i was pulling into the parking lot at work i noticed a decent size sun halo (looks like a rainbow encircling the sun). i parked a little off to the side and started snapping away. i saw tons of people just walking by and not even noticing what was right above their heads in plain sight! all they had to do was tilt their heads up slightly and they would see it! i also had to make up some excuse why i would be delayed for quite a while before arriving for work :D
no lousy throw away part time job was worth that kind of opportunity ;)

The problem with living in Arizona is that almost every sunset is a unique photograph. Like I've said the state flag is a sunset on top and a field of blue (for the deep blue skies). A typical sample:

Sorry to post a none sunset on here but ReF is this what you meant. I took it in Yosemite park at Easter. It was frosty & I assumed it was a result of ice crystals in the air causing some kind of diffraction ring. There were feint rainbow colours in reality but my little olly C40Z could only just capture them. Also tried the signature George thanks.

[QUOTE=Phill D]It was frosty & I assumed it was a result of ice crystals in the air causing some kind of diffraction ring. There were feint rainbow colours in reality but my little olly C40Z could only just capture them.QUOTE]

that's exactly what causes them and of the two i've seen, they've been on the pale side as well. the weird thing was that the second halo i saw was on a hot day and caused by what looked like cirrus clouds (ice) and a bunch of contrails. it's a good thing i decided to bring the camera along that day, as no one would expect to see something like that in the middle of a hot day.

Those Sun halos are VERY cool. In the Canadian Prairies, we'd get these things called "Sun Dogs" that are very similar. You'd get a semi-circle on both sides of the sun (often quite far apart) usually in the winter months, when ice crystals are abundant in the air. But I've actually seen one of those here in BC this past summer, it was a strange occurrance, and I REALLY wish I had taken my camera along with me as it was DURING a sun set too! :(

Anyways, I took these two pics from my backyard last fall. There was this really odd shaped, tall cloud shooting up into the sky that lit up in a really cool way - it almost looked like it was a flame in the sky. I've added a second pic that's zoomed out a bit more to give some perspective on the size of it.

Not a bore at all I like them too. First one is my favourite. I've never been to Pembroke but it looks like it will be added to the "must visit"list.

First one is definitely the best. Although I'm also from the "celtic fringe" of the UK, I've never set foot in Wales. Must try to change that.

This one, below, could be anywhere, couldn't it. I don't remember the sky being quite so vivid - but the camera never lies ... or so they (used to) say. Glad the boat came along before the sun went down. It's a bit of a cliche - the boat and the evening sun. A bit overexposed, too. Ah well, no-one's perfect.

Taken with a Powershot G2, a week or so before it died.

mike, you might want to bracket your shots to avoid blown highlights when you shoot high contrast or extremely bright scenes, just in case your camera's metering system doesn't do what you expect it to.

Thanks for the suggestion ReF,
I'm pretty new to all of this.I know when I took the pics from 8/31 I found that I had the iso at 1600 and they are real grainy full size.I now make sure that I check my settings before I start clickin.I didn't do and other processing to the other than the resize and photobucket actually did that.Any other suggestions or help from anyone is welcome.

Thanks,
Mike

Looks like you have overcome the exposure problem. Now I hope you aren't blind. My rule of taking sunsets is try to shoot the sun just going below the horizon, or partially hidden with some cloud cover. I get blue spots just looking at some of those shots.

Now you can have some fun...

... P.S. try to limit the final picture size to 800 x 600 when you post, so that it will fit in the browser window at 1024 x 768. That way we can see the whole picture without scrolling. ;)

I found a spot on the beach and this was my first attempt to change lenses and use a tripod at the same time. Besides shivering from the cold the sun was going down fast. i also was trying to capture the sun reflecting off the water for a not so typical shot of the sunset in the horizon. Sorry about the blue spots, its kinda bright isnt it lol :D

Not really sunset but late evening. The time of day when you can't see to drive. I didn't really know where else to post this. This is a view of the National Iwo Jima Memorial located in Newington, CT. Thanks for letting me share. All of the sunsets I have seen here are just awsome!

Big Jay Dog - that shot is beautiful. I love how the you can still see streams of sunlight streaking across the sky. Good work.

Awesome shot TJL - you can sure get some amazing colours in the desert hey?

This shot was taken at the same place where I got my last shot (Deception Pass Park, WA). I like how the colour at the bottom of the picture nearly matches that of the colours at the top of the image. A sharp contrast in sky colour...

Your second shot is v. good. You're in a land where there should be lots of photo opportunities. Keep at it.

I must be getting old... i looked at your address and wondered how to pronounce "Jhb". It took about a minute for me to catch on...

Oh dear. that it should come to this.

Hello all-
I have been in the Flower Thread for weeks--so many awesome shots there, and decided to venture in some of the other great threads around here.
I do have some sunsets, but I had this one real handy for now...
it is just on the road in St George, Utah, on the road back home to Denver, CO.

Wow Sod1, those pics are amazing! Can't say I've ever seen anything like that before. Very unique, well done!

Chilious, those look like some mean storm clouds. Unfortunately, living on the coast near the ocean I don't see too many clouds with that kind of horizontal development that often. That pic kind of reminds me of the movie Independence Day :)

Here's yet another pic from the same Washington park where I've got so many other sunset photos from. I like the silhouettes and contrast in sky colour in this one.
