Has any one had any experience of Telephoto lens VCL-DEH17VA on a DSC-V3

It boosts focal distance by 1.7X, up to 231.2 mm.
As a novice in such matters does this mean it will increase the X4 optical zoom on the DSC-V3 to a X6.8 optical zoom?

Well, almost, but not quite... the "x" of your zoom is just the longest focal length divided by the shortest. Default is (from the number you gave me) 136 / 34, which is 4X. When you put on the 1.7 teleconverter, it'll multiply BOTH of those numbers by 1.7, so you'd still have 4X, but this is 231.2 / 57.8 ... so the range is longer. If you consider the TOTAL range you have (widest angle with the lens OFF, and furthest zoom with the lens ON) then yeah, you'd now have a 6.8X zoom.

Thanks for that, I may consider buying one now.

I bought the wide lense made for the V3 by Sony...works great as far as my expectations!

I have a question on how you mount those lenses, I am looking at Sony DSC-W7 and the wide lens for it. I understand you need to buy this adapter also http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/ProductDetailDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&productId=172728

the question is how does it all work. I suppose it doesn't fix on the moving camera lens does it? Because then if you switched the camera off... so I suppose the adapter fixes somehow on the body of camera so that the lens can move inside it and hide inside the camera body if you switch it off, right?

And is the mount such, that you can easily put it on and off if you want to use it for just several shots and then return to normal lense use? I hope it wouldn't be too onerous to handle if you just want to slip it on for a minute to take those wide views of a room you are in or to take the landscape shot.

This is the one I would buy http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/ProductDetailDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&productId=167217
